On the 100th anniversary day of the passing away of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Royal Patron of the World Tipiṭaka, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Dhamma Society Fund jointly organised the Memorial Recitation of the World Tipiṭaka Edition on April 8, 2008, at the Bangkok Town Hall, which was presided over by Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsavali.

Three selected Pāḷi Tipiṭaka Quotations have been taken from the World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman script, the only two special sets which were graciously presented by the late Princess Galyani Vadhana in 2005 and 2007 to the Honorable Justices of the Constitutional Court of the Kingdom of Thailand and the President of the Supreme Court of the Kingdom of Thailand respectively. These two Royal Gifts are now permanently preserved at the Office of the Constitution Court and the Supreme Court in Bangkok.

กรุงเทพมหานครจัด “พิธีอ่านสังวัธยายพระไตรปิฎกสากล” ถวายเป็นพระราชกุศลแด่สมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่นางเธอ เจ้าฟ้ากัลยาณิวัฒนา กรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ ในวาระครบรอบ 100 วัน เสด็จสู่สวรรคาลัย ในวันที่ 8 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2551 ณ ลานคนเมือง ศาลาว่าการกรุงเทพมหานคร

เนื่องด้วยกรุงเทพมหานครเป็นสถาบันหนึ่งที่ได้อุปถัมภ์การจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกสากลเผยแผ่ไปในนานาประเทศตามพระราชประสงค์สมเด็จกรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ ดังนั้น กรุงเทพมหานครจึงได้จัดพิธีอ่านสังวัธยายพระไตรปิฎกสากล เพื่อน้อมรำลึกถึงองค์อุปถัมภ์พระไตรปิฎกสากล ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการบำเพ็ญกุศลถวายครบรอบ 100 วัน เสด็จสู่สววรคาลัย ในเดือนเมษายนศกนี้

พระไตรปิฎกเป็นคลังอารยธรรมทางปัญญาของมนุษยชาติ การจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกสากลชุดสมบูรณ์สำเร็จเป็นครั้งแรกในประเทศไทย ย่อมทำให้สามารถเผยแผ่พระไตรปิฎกสากลชุดนี้ได้แพร่หลายไปทั่วโลก ดังนั้นการอ่านออกเสียงพระไตรปิฎกร่วมกัน หรือเรียกตามศัพท์ว่า “สังวัธยายพระไตรปิฎก” จึงเป็นการศึกษาและอนุรักษ์พระไตรปิฎกสากลให้แพร่หลายยิ่งขึ้น

พิธีอ่านสังวัธยายพระไตรปิฎกสากล ณ ลานคนเมือง เป็นการเปิดโอกาสให้ประชาชนทั่วไปสามารถมีส่วนร่วมในการนำพุทธพจน์จากพระไตรปิฎกมาใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน และที่สำคัญเป็นการบำเพ็ญกุศลสร้างปัญญาบารมี เพราะการอ่านสังวัธยายพระไตรปิฎกทั้งภาษาบาฬีและภาคแปลภาษาไทย ทำให้ผู้อ่านสามารถเข้าถึงได้โดยตรงของคำทรงสอนแห่งสันติสุขในพระไตรปิฎกที่สืบทอดมาร่วม 3,000 ปี แล้ว

พิธีอ่านสังวัธยายพระไตรปิฎกสากล ณ ลานคนเมือง ศาลาว่าการกรุงเทพมหานคร จึงเป็นการบำเพ็ญกุศลของชาวกรุงเทพมหานครเพื่อน้อมถวายแด่สมเด็จกรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ ผู้ทรงพระคุณอันประเสริฐแก่ชาวกรุงเทพมหานครและชาวไทยทั้งมวล ซึ่งเป็นการจัดงาน ณ ศูนย์กลางพระนครหลวงของประเทศ

“ลานคนเมือง” เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของอาณาบริเวณประวัติศาสตร์ของกรุงเทพมหานคร ซึ่งเป็นที่ตั้งของพระอารามที่เป็นศูนย์กลางของเมืองหลวงของชาติ ได้แก่ วัดสุทัศนเทพวรารามวรมหาวิหาร พร้อมทั้งเป็นที่ตั้งของเทวสถานเก่าแก่ที่สร้างขึ้นตั้งแต่สถาปนากรุงเทพเป็นราชธานี ได้แก่ โบสถ์พราหมณ์ นอกจากนี้ยังเป็นที่ตั้งของเสาชิงช้า ซึ่งเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของกรุงเทพมหานคร และในอดีตเป็นหัวใจของ “พิธีโล้เสาชิงช้า” ซึ่งเป็นวัฒนธรรมคนเมืองกรุงเทพของไทยสมัยโบราณ

การที่พระเจ้าวรวงศ์เธอ พระองค์เจ้าโสมสวลี พระวรราชาทินัดดามาตุ ทรงรับเชิญกรุงเทพมหานครเพื่อทรงบำเพ็ญกุศลอ่านสังวัธยายพระไตรปิฎกสากลร่วมกับชาวกรุงเทพมหานคร ณ สถานที่อันเป็นหัวใจแห่งพระนคร จึงเป็นพระกรณียกิจใหม่ที่สำคัญอีกวันหนึ่งในประวัติศาสตร์ของกรุงเทพมหานคร อันเป็นการดำเนินตามรอยพระราชศรัทธาและพระปัญญาญาณในสมเด็จกรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ เพื่อสืบสานคลังอารยธรรมทางปัญญาในพระไตรปิฎกสากล ด้วยการบำเพ็ญกุศลที่เรียบง่ายแต่พร้อมด้วยปัญญาและศรัทธาในพระพุทธศาสนา ซึ่งจะทำให้พระไตรปิฎกสากลเผยแผ่ไปอย่างแพร่หลายและกว้างขวางทั้งในระดับนานาชาติและในจิตใจของประชาชนชาวไทยทั้งหลายตลอดไป

ブッダ・サーサナ（Buddhasāsanā）、またはブッディズム（Buddhism）という語には、一般的に幅広い意味があり、その範囲は、ダンマ（法）、サンガ（僧）、サンガの組織、サンガの活動から、仏教聖地や仏具にまで及びます。しかしブッダ・サーサナのほんとうの意味を調べてみますと、その意味は明白であり、文字通り 『ブッダの教え』という意味です。これがブッダ・サーサナの本質であり、他のものはブッダの教えの延長線上にあるにすぎないのです。

ブッダ・サーサナという語のほんとうの意味を理解すれば、ブッダ・サーサナが存続するということは、ブッダの教えが存続するという意味である、ということが分かるでしょう。もしブッダの教えが曖昧になったり、消失したなら、いかに信者の数が多くて活動が盛んであっても、いかに建物や組織、物が立派であったとしても、ブッダの教えが存在していると言うことはできません。反対に、そうした副次的なものがなくとも、ブッダの教えが存続しているなら、人々は仏教を知る機会を持つことができるのです。従って、ブッダの教えを保存することによって、仏教を真に保つことができるのです。

教えと戒律――ブッダの顕現と拠り所

ブッダ・サーサナ、すなわち仏教とは、ブッダの言葉、またはブッダの教えのことです。従って仏教を保存するということは、ブッダが説いた言葉と、ブッダが定めた戒律を保存するということなのです。

仏教徒は皆、教えと戒律がブッダを表しているということをよく知っています。というのも、ブッダは次のように説いているからです。

　　私が説いた教えと、私が定めた戒律とが
　　私の死後、お前たちの師となるのである
　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　
したがって、ブッダの教えと戒律を守るとき、ブッダの言葉は師の顕現であり、拠り所となるのです。

ですから、ブッダの言葉を保存することは極めて重要であり、仏教を存続することが鍵になります。ブッダの言葉を保存しようとする試みは、ブッダの生存時からなされています。

結集（Saṅgīti ）――ブッダの言葉の保存

ブッダの言葉を保存するために、ブッダが説いた教えをすべて集め、記憶しやすいようにいくつかのセクションに分けるという方法がとられました。参加者たちは、全員が完全に合意するまで徹底的に質疑応答を繰り返し、検討しました。合意が得られたら、承認し、確立するために、ブッダの言葉を合誦しました。このようにして、ブッダの言葉が記憶され、また、次世代に手渡すための文献の基準になるものとして集成されたのです。この方法はSaṅgīti （結集）と呼ばれ、合誦するという意味です。

結集、または合誦という方法は、ブッダの生存時から、ブッダの一番弟子であるサーリプッタ尊者によってなされていました。サーリプッタ尊者はブッダとその弟子たちの前で、師の言葉を集成し、各項目の数に基づいて、1のグループから10のグループまで整理して述べました。サーリプッタ尊者が暗誦を終えると、ブッダは賛意を示し、感嘆なされました。（Saṅgītisutta）

仏紀１年の最初の大会議

ブッダが入滅されて間もなく、最も大規模で重要な結集が執り行われました。ブッダの入滅7日後、マハーカッサパ尊者は僧たちに、結集のために集まるよう招集しました。僧たちは同意し、ブッダ入滅からわずか３ヵ月後に、最初の結集がラージャガハ（王舎城）で行われました。

このようにしてブッダの言葉の結集がなされたのです。ここには500人の阿羅漢が集まり、各分野でブッダの言葉を正確に思い出すことのできる阿羅漢たちが選ばれました。戒律にはウパーリ尊者が、教法にはアーナンダ尊者が選ばれました。その後、阿羅漢たちがブッダの言葉を合誦しました。座長のマハーカッサパ尊者は、質問をグループ化し、配列する方法を定めますた。つまり、体系化したのです。

ブッダの言葉の合誦がブッダの生存中に行われたなら、ブッダはそれを承認されたことでしょう。ブッダの滅後、第一結集以降、ブッダの言葉を口頭で正確に確実に保存するという責任が阿羅漢たちにかかりました。参集した阿羅漢たちが合意に達すると、皆で言葉を合誦し、それが受け継がれるよう記憶しました。こうして伝統が確立されたのです。

第１結集は最も重要です。なぜなら編集し記憶されたブッダの言葉は、これから基準になるからです。次に重要なことは、第一結集のブッダの言葉をそのまま完全に保存するということです。こうして、ブッダの言葉を保存する方法として合誦することに重きが置かれ、保存を委ねられた僧たちが記憶すべき部分を割り当てられたのです。

従って、第１結集こそが、真の意味での結集（ブッダの言葉を編成し、合誦すること）です。以後の結集は、確認の会議にすぎず、つまりブッダの言葉を記憶した僧たちが、第１結集で集められた師の言葉を無傷で改変することなく記憶していることを確認し、互いに調べ合うために召集された会議なのです。

第６結集（Chaṭṭhasaṅgīti ）
仏紀2500年の国際大会議

仏教が仏紀25世紀に達したとき、テーラワーダ仏教のすべての国々は大祝賀会の準備をしました。最初の国際結集が、仏紀2,496年から2,500（西暦 1,952年から1,956年）にミャンマーで召集されました。テーラワーダ仏教に帰依するすべての国々の仏教僧と仏教学者たち、そして仏教の教えが普及している国々が、ミャンマーに集まり、ビルマ版パーリ語三蔵経を、他の国々の異なる版と検討しました。この集会は第６結集（Chaṭṭhasaṅgīti ）と呼ばれ、あらゆる仏教国に認められました。

しかし第６結集が終わってすぐ、ミャンマーは混乱し、政変が起こりました。このため第６結集のパーリ語三蔵経の保存と印刷がスムーズに進まず、草稿として用いられたビルマ版と、結集の結果である決定版とを取り違える混乱が起こったのです。

現在、タイ最高僧長の（Somdet Phra Ñāṇasaṃvara ）法王が援助しているダンマソサエティ財団（the M.L. Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society Fund）が、ローマ字版第６結集パーリ語三蔵経を出版しようとしています。これは、世界中のテーラワーダ仏教僧が、校訂し編集したものです。こうしてパーリ語三蔵経は世界中で利用できるようになりました。

忍耐強く決意を持って、注意深く、ことを進めることにより、作業委員会は別の時期に印刷された第６結集パーリ語三蔵経を発見し、初版と校訂版を区別しました。そして、あとで印刷された版には、本来どうであったかという注釈をつけました。委員会は最も正確な版を得るために精力を傾けました。数か国のさまざまな版のパーリ語三蔵経が調べ直されました。第６結集の目標はついに実現されたようです。

タイ王国からダンマの贈り物

タイ最高僧長が援助するダンマソサエティ財団は、ローマ字版パーリ語三蔵経、つまり仏紀2,500年の国際大会議のパーリ語三蔵経を出版し、タイ国王王妃両陛下に敬意を表して、ブッダの教えが遠くまで行渡るよう、ダンマの贈り物として世界中に贈呈しています。この使者たちには、はじめ美しく、途中美しく、最後も美しいブッダの教えを伝道する任務があります。これはブッダが最初の弟子たちに、人類の幸福のためにブッダの言葉を伝えるように説いた教えなのです。

As we have all assembled here today under the sacred Bodhi Tree in the premises of the Mahā Bodhi Mahā Vihāra, Buddhagaya for the inauguration of the 3rd Annual 10-days Pāḷi Tipiṭaka Chanting, we wish to dedicate this year’s Chanting in memory of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra, the elder sister of His Majesty the King of Thailand, Royal Patron of the World Tipiṭaka Project and Honorary President of the Tipiṭaka Presentation to International Institutions Worldwide.

We wish to recall that in November, 2007, Her Royal Highness graciously presented the 40-volume Pāḷi Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman script to the Mahā Bodhi Society of India, the first institution in the Republic of India to have received the World Tipiṭaka Edition. It was published in 2005 by the Dhamma Society Fund under the patronage of His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand. This Royal Gift of Tipiṭaka has since been enshrined at the Jaya Sri Mahā Bodhi Vihara of the Mahā Bodhi Society of India.

Following this historic royal presentation, Dhamma Society Fund Thailand, has now published 600 sets of the Majjhimanikāya in 3 Volumes from the Roman-script Tipiṭaka edition, to be presented to the Mahā Bodhi Society of India today --February 12, 2008-- for distribution as a Gift of Dhamma to all the Venerable Monks participating in this year’s Tipiṭaka Chanting at Buddhagaya.

The merits accrued from the Tipiṭaka printing and Chanting, the noblest act to preserve the words of the Buddha in today's world, will be a supreme homage to the Holy Triple Gem, as well as a humble gesture of dedication merits to the most esteemed Patron of the Tipiṭaka, the late Princess Galyani Vadhana of Thailand.

The Maha Bodhi Society of India, Buddhagaya Centre deeply condoles the death of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra of Thailand on January 2, 2008.

The unceasing efforts and contributions of Her Royal Highness for the propagation and preservation of the Buddha Dhamma during her life time will be long cherished by the Buddhist World.

Her Royal Highness's death is great loss for the Buddhist World as well for the humanity in general.

We invoke the blessings of the Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha for her soul to rest in Peace and that she attain Nibbāna.

The Celebration of Tipiṭaka and Royal Presentation Ceremony

39 Patrons, including representative members of Royal Family, wives of the Supreme Court Judges, university professors, benefactors and leaders from business community, have been specially invited to become Tipiṭaka Bearers, whose duty is to hand-carry the historic edition of King of Siam Tipiṭaka into the Royal Chapel of the Emerald Buddha.

Published in 1893, the 39-volume King of Siam Tipiṭaka was the world's first printed set. This historic edition is one of the most important reference editions from which the newly published 40-volume World Tipiṭaka in Roman script is based.

December 11, 2007, the Grand Palace, Bangkok at 16.45 hrs. His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has given a royal permission to his daughter, Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha to preside over the Celebration of Tipiṭaka and Presentation Ceremony of the 40-volume World Tipiṭaka in Roman Script to President of the Supreme Court (Judge Virat Limvichai) which is to be preserved at the Supreme Court of Thailand. This speciall occaion is organised in honour of His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday.

In 2007, Her Royal Highness Princess Galayani Vadhana, the Royal Matriarch of Thailand, who is the Honorary President of Tipiṭaka Presentation Worldwide, has graciously instructed a special edition to be printed and presented to the Supreme Court of Thailand on this auspicious occasion this year

After arrival at Sala Saha Thai Samakom Hall, Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha is presided over an official group photograph with President and Justices of the Supreme Court of Thailand. Then the Princess commences the Tipiṭaka procession. 40 Tipiṭaka Patrons join the Princess to hand-carry 40 volumes Tipiṭaka into the Royal Chapel of the Emerald Buddha. The Roman-script edition is placed on the glass table next to the Siam-script edition which was printed by King Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao of Siam over a century ago.

In the presence of Her Royal Highness, 40 patrons of the World Tipiṭaka are introduced to the Princess Bajrakittiyabha, His Majesty the King's eldest grand-daughter. Each patron receives one volume of Tipiṭaka which is to be hand-carried into the Royal Chapel of the Emerald Buddha where it will be celebrated before it is presented to the Supreme Court of Thailand as a Royal Gift of Dhamma.

The celebration of the World Tipiṭaka is organised in the Grand Palace in supreme homage of Dhamma on occasion the King's 80th Birthday.

World Tipitaka Patron

The Princess then lights candles and joss sticks in homage of the Triple Gems, observes five precepts and then offers robes which were given by the Royal Matriarch to ten Buddhist monks. The Proclamation of Tipiṭaka Celebration is then read. At the end of the proclamation, court officers begin candle-light circumambulation ceremony in celebration of the Tipiṭaka.

After the candle-light circumambulation, the Princess reads a Royal Message for the Tipiṭaka Presentation on the occasion of the King's Birthday. The band plays the Royal Anthem in honour of the King. The Princess then hands over the Tipiṭaka Volume 1 Vinayapiṭaka (the Book of Discipline) to the President of the Supreme Court who consequently enshrines the Tipiṭaka on a special pedestal in front of the Emerald Buddha.

The World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman Script –the world's first complete 1957 International Council Edition– was published by Dhmma Society in Thailand in 2005. The inaugural 40-volume set was presented as a Royal Gift of Dhamma to the President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka during a historic 24-hour pilgrimage to Colombo by Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana.

The Pāḷi Tipiṭaka is the Holy Teaching of the Buddha. The printing and propagating of the sacred text for prosperity is thus considered an act of utmost meritorious importance.

In 2007, Princess Galyani Vadhana initiated the Presentation of Tipiṭaka as a merit-making on the occasion of the King's 80th Birthday.

The Pāḷi Tipiṭaka --the 40-volume World Edition in Roman script-- was presented this year as a Royal Gift of Dhamma, for the first time to the Supreme Court, the highest representative judiciary institution in the country, which according to the Constitution, exercises the judicial power for the welfare of the nation on behalf of the Buddhist Sovereign Monarch of Thailand.

Earlier this year, in honour of the King, Princess Galyani Vadhana graciously presented a special 40-volume set of the World Tipiṭaka and its 40-volume Tipiṭaka Studies Reference to the International Court of Justice, the Hague, Kingdom of Netherlands. The Royal Gift of Tipiṭaka was handed over to the President of the World Court by the President of the Supreme Court of Thailand at the Peace Palace in Netherlands on November 12, 2007.
