...เนื่องด้วยในปลายปี พ.ศ. 2553 คณะสงฆ์ผู้ที่คณะกรรมการ "มูลนิธิเสียงธรรมเพื่อประชาชนฯ" ได้ปรารถถึงความสำคัญของอักษรโรมัน ในการเผยแผ่ธัมมะ โดยใช้พิมพ์กำกับเสียงสวดมนต์ผ่านทางสถานีโทรทัศน์ และทางวิทยุของสถานีวิทยุเสียงธรรมเพื่อประชาชน โครงการพระไตรปิฎกสากลและกองทุนสนทนาธัมม์นำสุขฯ ในพระสังฆราชูปถัมภ์ฯ ผู้ดำเนินงานเผยแผ่ข้อมูลพระไตรปิฎกอักษรโรมัน จึงได้มอบข้อมูลพระไตรปิฎกอิเล็คทรอนิกส์ดังกล่าว ถวายแก่คณะสงฆ์

ต่อ มาในปี พ.ศ. 2554 เมื่อได้มีการประชุมร่วมระหว่างคณะสงฆ์กับโครงการพระไตรปิฎกสากล และกองทุนสนทนาธัมม์นำสุขฯ ในพระสังฆราชูปถัมภ์ฯ มากขึ้น มูลนิธิเสียงธรรมเพื่อประชาชนจึงได้รับทราบข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับพระ ไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม พ.ศ. 2436 ซึ่งเป็น "ต้นฉบับ" ที่สำคัญในการจัดทำฐานข้อมูล "ปาฬิภาสา-อักษรโรมัน" พ.ศ. 2548

ดัง นั้นเมื่อพระอาจารย์พระมหาบัวได้ละสังขารไปในปลายเดือนมกราคม 2554 โครงการพระไตรปิฎกสากล และกองทุนสนทนาธัมม์นำสุขฯ ในพระสังฆราชูปถัมภ์ฯ จึงได้มีจิตศรัทธาอย่างแรงกล้าในการถวายพระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม ฉบับอนุรักษ์ดิจิทัล พ.ศ. 2554 ซึ่งได้จัดพิมพ์ขึ้นใหม่ เป็นชุดพิเศษ ชุด 40 เล่ม ชุดเดียวในประเทศไทยในปีนี้ และเมื่อได้รับความเห็นชอบจากคณะสงฆ์ ก็ได้ทำการอัญเชิญพระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม ไปประดิษฐาน ณ วัดป่าบ้านตาด ทั้งนี้เพื่อทางคณะสงฆ์และกรรมการมูลนิธิเสียงธรรมเพื่อประชาชนฯ จะได้พิจารณานำข้อมูล และเนื้อหาไปเผยแผ่ต่อไป ตามเจตนารมย์ของพระอาจารย์พระมหาบัว ญาณสัมปันโน ผู้ซึ่งปฏิบัติตามธัมมะตามพระไตรปิฎกอย่างเคร่งครัด

และเนื่องด้วย พระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม มีระบบอักขรวิธีการเขียนปาฬิภาสา ที่เป็นเลิศ คือมีเครื่องหมายสัญลักษณ์ "ไม้ยามักการ" กำกับเสียงควบกล้ำที่ชัดเจน พระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยามชุดนี้ จึงเป็นเอกสารที่สำคัญยิ่งที่จะใช้อ้างอิงในการสวดสังวัธยายของสงฆ์ ซึ่งเป็นเสียง "ปาฬิภาสา" ที่ทางวัดป่าอรัญญวาสีได้สืบทอดต่อมาอย่างเคร่งครัดตามพระไตรปิฎก และการออกเสียงที่ได้สวดในพระปาติโมกข์

นอกจากนั้นที่สำคัญ ยิ่งยวดอีกประการก็คือ พระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2436 เป็นการจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกปาฬิภาสา เป็นชุดๆ แรกในประวัติศาสตร์พุทธศาสนา โดยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว เจ้ากรุงสยาม ทรงโปรดให้เปลี่ยนวิธีการอนุรักษ์พระพุทธพจน์จากคัมภีร์ใบลานอักษรขอมโบราณ มาเป็นกระดาษที่ทันสมัย และยังได้ตีพิมพ์เป็น "อักษรสยาม" แทน "อักษรขอม" ซึ่งอักษรสยามก็คือ อักษรที่ใช้เขียนภาษาไทยที่ประชาชนทั่วไปสามารถอ่านได้ดีด้วย

การ ดำเนินงานและจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎก จปร. เป็นช่วงที่สยามต้องเผชญกับวิกฤตการณ์ร้ายแรงจากลัทธิการล่าอาณานิคมของ ประเทศมหาอำนาจตะวันตก โดยเฉพาะฝรั่งเศส ซึ่งในปีรัตนโกสินทรศก ร.ศ. 112 หรือ พ.ศ. 2436 ฝรั่งเศสได้ส่งเรือรบมาปิดอ่าวไทย หมายจะยึดครองไทยเป็นเมืองขึ้น แต่แม้กระนั้น ไทยก็มีขันติธัมม์ และสามารถอดกลั้นต่ออกุสลทั้งปวง เพื่อเจรจารด้วยสันติวิธี และด้วยความชาญฉลาดของผู้นำกรุงสยาม สยามประเทศก็สามารถเจรจาสงบข้อพิพาทได้ และพระไตรปิฎก ฉบับ จปร. ก็จัดพิมพ์สำเร็จในปีนี้ด้วย อันเป็นมงคลของประเทศ ที่แม้มีปัญหารอบด้าน แต่สยามก็เป็นพระธัมมนคร สามารถจัดสร้างพระไตรปิฎกเป็นชุดตีพิมพ์เป็นชุดแรกของโลก เป็นพระธัมมทานไปทั่วสยาม และยังได้พระราชทานไปเป็นพระธัมมทาน แก่สถาบันสำคัญมในนานาประเทศทั่วโลก รวมทั้งประเทศฝรั่งเศส ด้วย

ด้วยเหตุสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ต่างๆ นี้ พระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม จึงเป็นสัญลักษณ์ --ภาพรวม-- ของสถาบันสำคัญสูงสุดของไทย คือ สถาบันพระพุทธศาสนา สถาบันชาติเอกราช และสถาบันพระมหากษัตริย์พุทธมามกะ ซึ่งล้วนเป็นสิ่งที่พระอาจารย์พระมหาบัว แห่งวัดป่าบ้านตาด ได้เมตตาปลูกฝังให้ชาวไทยตระหนักและปกป้องจนถึงที่สุดเพื่อประโยชน์อัน ไพบูลย์ของลูกหลานไทยในภายหน้า จนเกิดมีโครงการผ้าป่าช่วยชาติที่ยิ่งใหญ่ ที่ชาวไทยทั้งหลายจะไม่มีวันลืมเลือน...

The World Tipiṭaka in Roman Script was published by the Dhamma Society Fund and the World Tipiṭaka Project as a royal gift of Wisdom & Peace to the world.

สมาคม นักเรียนเก่ามหาวิทยาลัยวอชิงตัน ร่วมกับกองทุนสนทนาธัมม์นำสุขฯ ได้อัญเชิญพระไตรปิฎกสากล อักษรโรมัน ชุด 40 เล่ม ไปมอบเป็นพระธัมมทานในสมเด็จกรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ แก่หอสมุดมหาวิทยาลัยวอชิงตัน วันที่ 8 มีนาคม 2553 ซึ่งเป็นสถาบันแรกที่ได้รับมอบในสหรัฐอเมริกา

ในการนี้ มหาวิทยาลัยวอชิงตันได้เชิญผู้แทนจากราชบัณฑิตยสถานไปร่วมพิธีด้วย

Is one of the most important days in Buddhism
Because of three important incidents in the life of The Buddha;

The Day of Visak, formally entitled as the Historical and Timeless Significance, is a Tipiṭaka Multimedia, produced by the Dhamma Society for the inauguration of the International Tipiṭaka Hall Vasaka Celebration in 2003.

Pāḷi Recitation and translations in Thai and English by Master Siri Petchai and Prof Visudh Busyakul. Included are also passages from Pāḷi Tipiṭaka and translations in Sinhalese, German, French, and English. Dhamma Society wishes to thank all individual participants in this production.

On November 24th 2009, Ajahn Pasanno, Abbot of Abhayagīrī, was invited to attend a celebration ceremony at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, in Bangkok. The sponsoring organization, The World Tipiṭaka Project in Roman Script, had also invited members of the Sangha from Burma – including monks who could recite either two or all three of the divisions of the Pāḷi Canon – as well as senior monks from the Theravādan regions of Yunnan, in mainland China.

The principal aim of this private organisation is to provide the world with a reliable edition of the Pāḷi Canon in Roman script. To that end they have spent ten years poring over extant editions. These include the text agreed upon by the Sixth Great International Council, held in Burma over the year 2500 of the Buddhist era (1956-57), the edition produced by the Pāḷi Text Society, as well as that of S.N. Goenka’s students, and several others. Through meticulous checking and cross-checking they managed to find and correct literally hundreds of thousands of typographical and other errors. Their efforts have born fruit in what can certainly be reckoned as the most trustworthy representation of the Word of the Buddha, in the Roman alphabet.

The ceremony in Bangkok was an occasion of commitment; the group has undertaken to offer these sets of 40 volumes to various universities and monasteries worldwide, many of them going to the very same institutions that were given similar sets in 1897, but in Siam (Thai) script, by King Chulalonkhorn Chulachomklao of Siam. Last year’s ceremony was presided over by HRH Princess Chulabhorn – the youngest daughter of the current King and Queen of Thailand – and was also an occasion to dedicate the blessings of the offering to the His Holiness, Somdet Phra Ñāṇasaṃvara, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, on his 96th birthday.

On March the 13th 2010, Abhayagīrī Monastery was honoured to receive a delegation of twenty people from The World Tipiṭaka Project, headed by the Project’s founder and primary organizer, Maj. Bunnag, and M.L. Anong Ninubon, who also celebrated her 93rd birthday that very day. The group had come to make a presentation of sets of the Tipiṭaka to The University of Washington, Seattle, as well as to Abhayagīrī. In addition they came to visit The University of California, Berkeley, particularly to view the edition of the Chulachomklao of Siam Pāḷi Tipiṭaka that had been given to that university in 1897.

As this was an auspicious and unique event many of the long-standing friends and supporters of Abhayagīrī gathered for the occasion, even though it was in the usually quiet time of the winter retreat. Many of our regular visitors also stowed their customary wardrobe of jeans and t-shirts for the day with everyone making impressive efforts to deck themselves in suitably festive attire. As befitted the occasion, the hall was also festooned with an abundance of flowers; delicate bouquets and effulgent sprays garlanded the newly-offered volumes.

The visitors began the event by showing a presentation about their project and, when all of the procedures of the presentation were complete, and reflections on the occasion had been offered, the event was closed by reciting the Buddha's first teaching – Dhammacakkappavattanasutta : The Discourse on Setting in Motion the Wheel of Dhamma – and a communal Sharing of Blessings.

It is in the spirit of sharing blessings that this energetic and generous group have put forth the Herculean effort required to create this World Edition of the Pāḷi Canon. They see that these teachings are part of the world’s heritage of knowledge and have undertaken this endeavour in order to enable all those who wish to partake of that knowledge to be able to access it freely.

May the books that they have offered to this one small monastery serve to illuminate the hearts and minds of all who reside here, and thus help to illuminate the lives of all those with whom we are connected.

Patrons of the World Tipiṭaka, Ladies and Gentlemen :

The Pāḷi Tipiṭaka is for we Buddhists the font of our religion. It is where we get our ethics, our world view and our philosophy from. Each Buddhist Culture reads the Tipiṭaka in their own language or at least in their own script. But with Buddhism now spreading to the West there is a need for an accurate and reliable edition of the Tipiṭaka in Roman script.

Of course the Tipiṭaka has been published in Roman script before but all these editions have various errors or drawbacks. For example, I was looking at the first volume of Fausboll's edition of the Jataka published in 1877 by the Pali Text Society and noticed that it has four pages of corrections and additions and that when this volume was reprinted in 2000 these corrections and additions had still not been included in the text.

This is not to disparage the dedication and hard work of earlier scholars but merely to point out that there is still room for improvements. And this edition in Roman script definitely is an improvement. Indeed it is a work of the highest order and a truly magnificent monument to Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana in whose memory this gift is made to our and other societies and institutions, and to Mrs. Maniratana Bunnag, the founder of the World Tipiṭaka Project. In preparing this new edition advanced computer-controlling procedures have been used in several dimensions to ensure complete accuracy such as, double-cross checking, from the revision stage through to the artwork, layout and printing.

Most importantly, in the World Tipiṭaka Edition, the Pāḷi text with special diacritical marks has been printed by using an open-standard typeface which is user-friendly and easy to copy into any electronic format for references. I noticed also that the layout, design, binding and paper used in each volume are all of the highest quality. This new edition of the Tipiṭaka is not just a major achievement from the point of view of Buddhist scholarship,it is also aesthetically pleasing, which is only appropriate for an edition of the sacred scriptures.

In our society it will be treasured and used. On behalf of the Buddha Dhamma Mandala Society of Singapore we would like to thank Col. Suradhaj Bunnag, and all the Patrons for all the help you have given us and other recipients.

Univ of Washington Tipitaka Procession for Wisdom & Peace

Members of various organisations from Thailand and USA are seen participating in the Tipitaka Procession to specially transport the 40-volume royal gift of the World Tipitaka in Roman Script to the ceremony hall on the forth floor of the Suzzlo Library Complex. The World Tipitaka was published by the Dhamma Society in 2005 and has has been presented for the first time in the US to the University of Washington Libraries in Seattle. The special presentation is a prelude to the forthcoming World Tipitaka Presentation to leading institutions in USA following the royal gift of Tipitaka in Siam-Script Edition from King Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao of Siam in 1893.

The Tipitaka, orally transmitted in Pali language of Indo-Arayan origin, is the sacred text of the Buddha's words which have been preserved well intact through Great Councils for over 2500 years. This is the first time that the Great International Council Manuscript "the World Edition B.E. 2500/1957" has been published in Roman script (International Phonetic Albhabet Pali, IPA Pali) in the standard 40 volumes together with support from the World Tipitaka WebService Database.

It is a great honor that you have come to the University of Washington to present the World Tipiṭaka to our Libraries.

Although the link between the University and Thailand may not date back to 1895, it does have a long and significant history.

2010 is the hundredth anniversary of Asian Studies at the University, a field that today is under the auspices of the Jackson School of International Studies and the Department of Asian Languages and Literature.

Thai language was first taught at the University of Washington in the 1950s under the direction of Professor Li Fang-kuei, a distinguished linguist who specialized on languages in China and Southeast Asia. The University of Washington has offered Thai instruction ever since, and is one of a handful of universities in America to have such a long record of Thai language instruction. We are fortunate to have Dr. Wiworn Kesavatana-Dohrs continuing this role.

In the 1950s Thai students began to come to the University of Washington from Thailand for the first time. Among the first Thai to receive PhDs here were Dr. Deb Menasveta (เทพเมนะเศวต) in fisheries and Dr. Sanga Sabhsri in forestry, both of whom went on to have very distinguished careers. I know that the late Dr. Sanga would have been very pleased with this event today as he was a devout Buddhist and we are delighted that Dr. Deb is represented here today by Dr. Piamsak, his son.

I personally decided to join the faculty of the University in 1965 because I felt confident that given the commitment to instruction in Thai and in Asian studies more generally as well as the attraction of Thai students to the university that this would be an excellent place to promote Thai studies. There have been a few ups and downs from time to time, but my early faith has clearly been realized.

During my long tenure at the University, I have been very fortunate to recruit, find support for and see through to completion of their PhD programs almost a dozen students from Thailand. Ajarn Amara Pongsapich, the director of the Thai Human Rights Commission and former dean of the Faculty of Political Science at Chulalongkorn University who is here today, was the first and most distinguished of this group. These luksit are the legacy of which I am most proud.

When I first came to the University I found that the Libraries already had an embryonic collection of Western language materials on Thailand. I soon realized that the Libraries staff were very receptive to building a collection in Thai language materials as well as in other languages about Thailand. In each of the extended research trips I made to Thailand from the 1960s through the 1990s, I collected many works in Thai, most of which are now in the Libraries collection.

As the founding director of Southeast Asian studies at the University, I recognized that the development of collections on Southeast Asia, including Thailand, would be greatly enhanced if there were a position at the Libraries dedicated to this goal. We were fortunate first in receiving funding from the Luce Foundation for such a position and then even more fortunate in recruiting Dr. Judith Henchy, who has organized this event, to fill it.

Judith has recently secured funding from the US Department of Education for a project joint with the Maha Chakri Princess Sirindhon Center and Mahidol University’s Institute for Population and Social Research to develop a virtual archive, searchable in both Thai and English, of research materials on Thailand. Thus, the University of Washington Libraries is contributing to the development of Thai studies not only here, but also in Thailand itself.

I see the presentation of the collection of the World Tipiṭaka here today not only as an honor for the University of Washington Libraries, but as the capstone of UW’s long connection with Thailand. ขอบคุณมากฯ ครับ

The Presentation of The World Tipiṭaka in Roman Script
To The University of Washington 2010

It is with great privilege and honor for me to be addressing this gathering on the Occasion of the Presentation of the World Tipiṭaka in Roman Script to the University Library of the University of Washington, my alma mater.

This royal gift has been published by the M.L. Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society Fund under the Patronage of His Holiness Somdet Phra Nanasanvara, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand.

The World Tipiṭaka is being presented by the M.L. Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society Fund in cooperation with the UW Alumni Association of Thailand.

The publication of the Roman Script Edition is the result of care and dedication of many people, too numerous to mention here. Nevertheless, their efforts are very much appreciated with great respect and gratitude. The preparation involved complicated tasks, facilitated by the use of Information Technology with rigorous computer-controlled procedures.

The process included:

• recitation by canonical Tipiṭaka experts,

• verification of the authenticity of the original manuscripts and phonetic verification of every sound,

• correction of printing errors, and

• numerous proof-readings to ensure accuracy.

In addition, the project committee also made reference to all modern 18 editions of the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka. The reference collection totals over 2,000 volumes and has been presented as a donation to Chulalongkorn University.

The World Tipiṭaka is considered as a Gift of Wisdom and Peace. To date, more than 40 leading international institutions in 20 countries have been presented with the gift.

1. In 2004, the formal and final announcement of the world’s first printed set of the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka Roman Script Edition was made in a special Royal Lecture for Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra, who was the Royal Matriarch of the Descendents of King Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao of Siam.

2. In 2005, the special inaugural 40-volume edition in Roman script was finally published by the Dhamma Society. These special sets were graciously presented during the same year by Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Honorary President of the World Tipiṭaka as a Royal Gift of Wisdom & Peace.

3. In 2008, the World Tipiṭaka WebService was made available on the internet as a gift of Dhamma, for institutional request. This will result in:

* Eliminating the information cost of the Tipiṭaka Wisdombase.

* Making the Wisdom Heritage in the Tipiṭaka more accessible to a greater

number of people.

* Facilitating Tipiṭaka Studies by making the World Tipitaka Reference available electronically.

4. In 2010, this year, the Personalized Digital Tipiṭaka Printing and the Tipiṭaka Social Networking through the World Tipiṭaka WebService will be made available. Like-minded individuals interested in Tipiṭaka Studies can be connected online to form networks. Furthermore, networking of Tipiṭaka study groups can also be made possible.

Human Rights

In terms of Human Rights, the new initiative in Tipiṭaka Studies, which allows electronic access to the 40-volume Roman Script Edition will enable scholars and practitioners to explore the teachings on specific topics more deeply. Each person will be able to retrieve, examine, and make interpretations freely and at one’s own pace. I would like to discuss two topics related to Human Rights.

1. Rights and Justice

1. Since, knowledge can be access through self actualization without domination; therefore, the interpretation of what is “right” and what is “just” can be made individually.

2. “Righteousness and Justice for one” and “Righteousness and Justice for all” then become fundamental ethical values of individuals and society.

3. Interpretation of human relationship between individual inner life process and social values can be made through personal experience in the course of realizing of the true self in one’s own way.

4. Conscious concern for social and ethical values can be realized and practiced.

2. Freedom, Equality and Democracy

1. Freedom. The principle of relying on oneself is the essence of each individual’s virtue. Hence one has freedom to choose one’s own interpretation and one’s own destiny.

2. Equality. The emphasis on one’s inner life puts unqualified faith on the quality of oneselves which are all the same with no distinction as to class, race, and gender.

3. Democracy. This term puts focus on the “demo” which concerns people and/or citizen. In the Tipiṭaka, the term is dhamma-cracy which puts the concern on Righteousness and Justice. Hence the emphasis is on the essence or quality not on the citizen and the rulers.

Finally, I would like to end my remark by expressing my appreciation to the Library of the University of Washington in making this occasion possible for the benefit of humanity of this generation and future generations.

การสร้าง "พระไตรปิฎกสากล อักษรโรมัน" ตามรอย "พระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม"
เป็นความสำเร็จของอารยธรรมภูมิปัญญาไทยสากล

เมื่อ 116 ปีมาแล้ว พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้โปรดให้จัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎก ภาษาปาฬิ (ภาษาบาลี) เป็นฉบับพิมพ์ชุดหนังสือเป็นครั้งแรก ซึ่งปัจจุบันอาจดูว่าการพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกเป็นเรื่องธรรมดา แต่ในประวัติศาสตร์ ในช่วงปี 2436 นับว่าเป็นช่วงเวลาที่สำคัญอย่างยิ่งต่อความมั่นคงของชาติ เพราะขณะนั้นประเทศในเอเชียส่วนใหญ่ได้ตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของมหาอำนาจตะวันตก ส่วนประเทศไทยก็กำลังเผชิญวิกฤตการณ์ร้ายแ รงของการล่าอาณานิคมจากตะวันตก

การที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู ่หัว ได้พระราชทานพระไตรปิฎก จปร. ทั่วประเทศ ในยุคที่ชาติมีวิกฤตทางการเมืองระหว่างประเทศนั้น อาจกล่าวได้ว่าเป็นการสร้างขวัญของความสามัคคีร่วมใจกันในทางธัมมะ อันเป็นยุทธศาสตร์และจิตวิทยาในการรักษาเอกราชของประเทศไทย ซึ่งต่อมาข้อขัดแย้งระหว่างไทยกับตะวันตกก็ยุติด้วยการเจรจาในปี 2436 ซึ่งเป็นปีที่จัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกสำเร็จหลังจากที่ดำเนินการจัดสร้างมานานกว่า 6 ปี

การสร้างพระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม เป็นการแสดงถึงภูมิปัญญาไทยที่ก้าวล้ำนำยุค โดยการนำเทคโนโลยีการพิมพ์ของตะวันตก มาพิมพ์คลังอารยธรรมทางปัญญาของมนุษยชาติ ได้แก่คำสอนของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า

การจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎก ฉบับอักษรสยามชุดนี้ เป็นการเปลี่ยนการบันทึกคำสอนในใบลานของพระพุทธศาสนา จำนวนกว่า 50,000 แผ่น มาจัดพิมพ์เป็นหนังสือถึง 15,000 หน้ากระดาษ รวม 39 เล่ม ซึ่งนับเป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางประวัติศาสตร ์ในรอบ 2 พันปี

ที่สำคัญพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ยังได้โปรดให้ส่งพระไตรปิฎกชุดนี้ไปพระราชทานแก่ 260 สถาบันในนานาชาติ ไม่น้อยกว่า 30 ประเทศทั่วโลกในปัจจุบัน

ปัจจัยการสร้างเครือข่ายใน นานาชาตินี้ มีส่วนสำคัญให้นานาชาติช่วยเหลือประเทศไทย ให้พ้นจากการกดดันของมหาอำนาจในอดีต และในปัจจุบันพระไตรปิฎก จปร. ของชาวไทยก็ยังเก็บรักษาไว้เป็นสมบัติล้ำค ่าในสถาบันภูมิปัญญาทั่วโลก

คุณหญิงแสงเดือน ณ นคร ประธานจัดงานฯ กล่าวว่า มูลนิธิร่วมจิตต์น้อมเกล้าฯเพื่อเยาวชน ในพระบรมราชินูปถัมภ์ และกองทุนสนทนาธัมม์นำสุขฯ ในพระสังฆราชูปถัมภ์ฯ ร่วมกับกระทรวงกลาโหม จัดพิธีสมโภชพระไตรปิฎกสากลและถวายถวายแด่ สมเด็จพระสังฆราช ในปี 2552 ซึ่งปีนี้เป็นการจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกสากลชุ ด 40 เล่ม ซึ่งจัดพิมพ์ตามรอยพระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5

ที่ผ่านมาโครงการพระไตรปิฎกสากล ได้ดำเนินการอย่างต่อเนื่องตั้งแต่ปี 2524 จนถึงปัจจุบัน โดยใช้เวลาในการดำเนินงานเป็นเวลาถึง 10 ปี และขณะนี้ได้มีการพระราชทานพระไตรปิฏกสากล เป็นพระธัมมทานจากประเทศไทยไปแล้วกว่า 38 สถาบัน ใน 18 ประเทศทั่วโลก ทั้งนี้การถวายพระไตรปิฎกสากล แด่สมเด็จพระสังฆราช ผู้ทรงมีความบริสุทธิ์ในศีลาจาริยวัตรและพ ระธัมมวินัย ในวาระที่ทรงเจริญพระชันษา 96 ปี

การบำเพ็ญทานกิริยาสร้างพระไตรปิฎกถือเป็นกุศลอันเลิศ และเป็นการสืบทอดพระไตรปิฎก ซึ่งเป็นสถาบันพระพุทธศาสนา

ด้านพลเอกอภิชาต เพ็ญกิตติ ปลัดกระทรวงกลาโหม กล่าวว่า กระทรวงกลาโหม ในฐานะที่เป็นสถาบันหลักที่จัดพิมพ์พระไตร ปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ซึ่งถือเป็นเกียรติสูงส่งในการสร้างพระไตร ปิฎก จปร. ชุดประวัติศาสตร์ของโลกในอดีต ซึ่งปัจจุบันเป็นฉบับที่เป็นรากฐานของการจ ัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกสากล อักษรโรมัน ดังนั้นกระทรวงกลาโหมจึงถือเป็นภารกิจหลัก ในการเข้าร่วมสมโภชพระไตรปิฎก อักษรโรมันชุดสมบูรณ์ที่จัดพิมพ์ขึ้นใหม่ใ นประเทศไทย

พิธีนี้จัดขึ้นเพื่อถวายแด่สมเด็จพระสังฆราชในปี 2552 พร้อมทั้งเป็นการถวายเพื่อเป็นพระราชกุศล แด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจาอยู่หัว และ สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ผู้ทรงเป็นพุทธมามกะผู้ทรงพระคุณอันประเสริฐ

ทั้งนี้สมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกเธอเจ้าฟ้าจุฬาภรณวลัยลักษณ์อัครราชกุมารี จะเสด็จทรงเป็นประธานในการสมโภชและถวายพระไตรปิฎกสากล อักษรโรมัน ตามรอยพระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม ในวันที่ 24 พฤศจิกายน 2552 ณ พระอุโบสถ วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม

เมื่อ 116 ปีมาแล้ว พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้โปรดให้เสนาบดีกระทรวงกลาโหมเป็นประธานในการจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎก ภาษาปาฬิ (เดิมเรียก บาลี) เป็นฉบับพิมพ์เป็นชุดเป็นครั้งแรก ปัจจุบันอาจดูว่าการพิมพ์หนังสือพระไตรปิฎกเป็นเรื่องธรรมดา แต่ในบริบทประวัติศาสตร์ ร.ศ. 112 (พ.ศ. 2436) นับเป็นช่วงเวลาที่สำคัญอย่างยิ่งยวดต่อความมั่นคงแห่งชาติ เพราะขณะนั้นประเทศในเอเซียส่วนใหญ่ ได้ตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของมหาอำนาจตะวันตกส่วนที่เหลือ เช่น กรุงสยาม ก็กำลังเผชิญวิกฤตการณ์ร้ายแรงของการล่าอาณานิคมจากตะวันตก

การที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้พระราชทานพระไตรปิฎก จปร. ชุดนี้ไปทั่วกรุงสยาม ในยุคที่ชาติมีวิกฤติทางการเมืองระหว่างประเทศ อาจกล่าวได้ว่า เป็นการสร้างขวัญของความสมัครสมานร่วมใจกันในทางธัมมะ อันเป็นยุทธศาสตร์และจิตวิทยาอันชาญฉลาด ในการรักษาเอกราชสยามด้วยขันติธัมม์และปัญญา เพราะต่อมาข้อขัดแย้งระหว่างไทยกับตะวันตกก็ยุติด้วยการเจรจา ในปี พ.ศ. 2436 (ร.ศ. 112) ซึ่งเป็นปีที่จัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกอักษรสยามสำเร็จพอดี หลังจากที่ดำเนินจัดสร้างมานานกว่า 6 ปี

นอกจากนี้การพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎก จปร. ปัจจุบันยังถือเป็นการพิมพ์ที่เป็นเลิศ และเป็นชุดหนังสือครั้งแรกของโลก การพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกภาษาปาฬิด้วยอักษรสยามแทนอักษรขอมโบราณ เป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางวัฒนธรรมที่สำคัญยิ่งในประวัติศาสตร์ภูมิปัญญา

พระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม ยังแสดงภูมิปัญญาไทยในการนำเทคโนโลยีการพิมพ์ของตะวันตก มาพิมพ์คลังอารยธรรมทางปัญญาของมนุษยชาติ อันเป็นคำทรงสอนของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ซึ่งการเปลี่ยนการบันทึกคำสอนในใบลานกว่า 50,000 แผ่น มาจัดพิมพ์เป็นหนังสือถึง 15,000 หน้ากระดาษ รวม 39 เล่ม เป็นการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางประวัติศาสตร์ในรอบ 2 พันปี และที่สำคัญยังได้จัดส่งพระราชทานพระไตรปิฎกฉบับนี้ไปยัง 260 สถาบันในนานาชาติไม่น้อยกว่า 30 ประเทศทั่วโลก ปัจจัยการสร้างเครือข่ายในนานาประเทศนี้ มีส่วนสำคัญให้นานาชาติช่วยเหลือสยาม ให้พ้นการกดดันของมหาอำนาจบางประเทศในอดีต และในปัจจุบันพระไตรปิฎก จปร. ของชาวไทยก็ยังเก็บรักษาใว้เป็นสมบัติล้ำค่า ในสถาบันภูมิปัญญาทั่วโลก

กระทรวงกลาโหม ในฐานะที่เป็นสถาบันหลักที่จัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎก จปร. อักษรสยาม ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 ถือเป็นเกียรติสูงส่งที่ในอดีตได้มีส่วนในการสร้างพระไตรปิฎก จปร. ชุดประวัติศาสตร์ของโลก ซึ่งปัจจุบันเป็นรากฐานของการจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกสากล อักษรโรมัน ด้วยเหตุนี้กระทรวงกลาโหม จึงถือเป็นภารกิจหลักที่จะเข้าร่วมในการสมโภชพระไตรปิฎกสากล อักษรโรมัน ชุดสมบูรณ์ 40 เล่ม ที่ได้จัดพิมพ์ใหม่ในประเทศไทย เพื่อน้อมถวายแด่สมเด็จพระสังฆราชในปีนี้ ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องของวัฒนธรรมทางปัญญาและสถาบันแห่งชาติ และเป็นงานที่จัดขึ้นเพื่อถวายเป็นพระราชกุศล แด่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และสมเด็จ พระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ผู้ทรงเป็นพุทธมามกะผู้ทรงพระคุณอันประเสริฐด้วย

ในนามของโครงการสมทบกองทุนเผยแผ่พระไตรปิฎกสากล ในสมเด็จกรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ ซึ่งดำเนินงานโดยมูลนิธิร่วมจิตต์น้อมเกล้าฯ เพื่อเยาวชน ในพระบรมราชินูปถัมภ์ ร่วมกับกองทุนสนทนาธัมม์นำสุข ท่านผู้หญิง ม.ล.มณีรัตน์ บุนนาค ในพระสังฆราชูปถัมภ์ ดิฉันรู้สึกปลื้มปีติเป็นอย่างยิ่ง ที่กระทรวงกลาโหมให้เกียรติโครงการ โดยเข้าร่วมการจัดพิธีสมโภชและถวายพระไตรปิฎกสากล อักษรโรมันแด่สมเด็จพระญาณสังวร สมเด็จพระสังฆราช สกลมหาสังฆปริณายก โดยสมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกเธอ เจ้าฟ้าจุฬาภรณวลัยลักษณ์ อัครราชกุมารี จะเสด็จทรงเป็นประธาน ในวันที่ 24 พฤศจิกายน 2552 ณ อุโบสถวัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม

สมเด็จพระสังฆราชพระองค์นี้ได้ทรงอุปถัมภ์โครงการพระไตรปิฎกตั้งแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2542 ต้องใช้เวลาดำเนินงานมาถึงวันนี้เป็นเวลา 10 ปี บัดนี้ ได้มีการพระราชทานพระไตรปิฎกเป็นพระธัมมทานจากประเทศไทยไปแล้ว กว่า 38 สถาบัน ใน 18 ประเทศทั่วโลก การน้อมถวายพระไตรปิฎกสากล ในวาระที่ทรงเจริญพระชันษา 96 ปี แด่สมเด็จพระสังฆราชผู้ทรงมีความบริสุทธิ์ในการรักษาพระธัมมวินัย และเคร่งครัดในศีลาจริยวัตร จึงเป็นการบำเพ็ญกุศลธัมมทานอันเลิศ และเป็นการสืบทอดพระไตรปิฎก ซึ่งเป็นสถาบันพระพุทธศาสนา

สรุป : ปัญหาโลกร้อนนับวันจะทวีความรุนแรงมากขึ้น เป็นมหันตภัยซึ่งจะเป็นปัญหาความมั่นคงแห่งชาติ เพราะไม่สามารถมีการบริหารจัดการได้ถูกต้อง

ในการแก้ปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อม วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีมิอาจเป็นปัจจัยในการแก้ปัญหาเพียงอย่างเดียว แต่จิตสำนึกด้านสิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญในการแก้ปัญหด้วย นอกจากนี้ ความรู้ความเข้าใจในธรรมชาติที่ลึกซึ้ง ก็เป็นปัจจัยที่สำคัญที่จะต้องเสริมสร้างให้เกิดขึ้นพร้อมกัน

สำหรับประเทศที่กำลังพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีควรมีวิสัยทัศน์ทางการศึกษาและแก้ปัญหาอย่างไรเพื่อให้เกิดความมั่นคงแห่งชาติด้วย ?

การนำเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศ โดยเฉพาะเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศด้านการพิมพ์ที่เหมาะสมในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 เป็นตัวอย่างการใช้เทคโนโลยีที่เป็นยุทธศาสตร์ เพราะสามารถสร้างจิตสำนึกชาติไทยในการกู้วิกฤติของยุคได้

กล่าวคือทรงใช้เทคโนโลยีพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎก อักษรสยาม ซึ่งทำให้เกิดความสำนึกของชาติเชื่อมโยงกับในยุควิกฤติ และในขณะเดียวกัน การพิมพ์เนื้อหาทางปัญญาในพระไตรปิฎก ก็แสดงถึงอารยธรรมสูงสุดของมนุษยชาติที่ทั่วโลกยอมรับ ซึ่งส่งเสริมปัจจัยด้านการเมืองและความมั่นคงของชาติด้วย

ในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้ทรงโปรดให้จัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกเป็นชุดหนังสือ ชุดแรกของโลก และได้พระราชทานไปทั่วกรุงสยามเป็นจำนวน 500 ชุด และต่อมาได้พระราชทานอีก 260 ชุด ไปยังสถาบันต่างๆ ระดับนานาชาติ ใน 30 ประเทศทั่วโลก

ยุค ร.ศ. 112 ในสมัย รัชกาลที่ 5 นี้ ถือเป็นยุคล่าอาณานิคมและเป็นช่วงที่กรุงสยามเกิดวิกฤตการณ์อันร้ายแรงกับมหาอำนาจตะวันตก ดังนั้นการพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกได้สำเร็จ จึงถือเป็นความสำคัญทางประวัติอย่างยิ่ง

นอกจากคุณประโยชน์ยิ่งใหญ่ของการพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกได้สำเร็จลุล่วงแล้ว ผลแห่งธัมมานุภาพของการพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกในครั้งนั้นย่อมเป็นกุศลและปัจจัยแก่กรุงสยามด้วย เพราะการพระราชทานพระไตรปิฎกไปทั่วโลก เป็นการสร้างเครือข่ายมิตรภาพทางภูมิปัญญาระดับสูง

พระไตรปิฎก จปร. ที่นอรเวย์ :

ในปี พ.ศ.2552 ผู้แทนจากราชบัณฑิตยสถานได้ไปสำรวจพระไตรปิฎก จปร ที่กรุงออสโล ประเทศนอรเวย์ และได้พบว่ามหาวิทยาลัยแห่งกรุงออสโล ได้ทำการเก็บรักษาพระไตรปิฎก จปร. ไว้เป็นอย่างดี

ชาวนอรเวย์ได้เห็นถึงความสำคัญของพระไตรปิฎกอักษรสยาม ว่าเป็นคลังอารยธรรมทางปัญญาและปัจจุบันกำลังดำเนินการแปลพระไตรปิฎกภาษาปาฬิให้เป็นภาษานอรเวย์อีกด้วย

ในการไปสำรวจพระไตรปิฎกในประเทศนอรเวย์นั้น ทำให้เกิดความเข้าใจและเห็นถึงการสร้างเครือข่ายในนานาประเทศทั่วโลก และได้เกิดแนวความคิดต่างๆ ในพระไตรปิฎกในการวิเคราะห์ปัญหาและการหาหนทางแก้ไขปัญหา เช่น หลักอริยสัจจะ ดังที่ได้กล่าวมาแล้ว

การจัดพิมพ์พระไตรปิฎกในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 นอกจากเป็นการอนุรักษ์แนวคิดในพระไตรปิฎกที่เป็นอมตะแล้ว ยังเป็นการนำเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศ มาใช้อย่างมียุทธศาสตร์ในการสร้างเครือข่ายพระไตรปิฎกไทยกับประเทศมหาอำนาจทั่วโลก

เนื่องด้วย การบรรยายในครั้งนี้ตรงกับวันที่ 11 พฤศจิกายน ซึ่งเป็นวันคล้ายวันบรมราชาภิเศกของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ดังนั้นขอจบการบรรยายในวันนี้ ด้วยการอัญเชิญภาพพระไตรปิฎก จปร. ซึ่งได้ทำการอนุรักษ์ถ่ายภาพด้วยระบบดิจิทัล และจัดพิมพ์ในระบบสื่อผสมสำเร็จเป็นครั้งแรกแก่ที่ประชุมได้ชมและอนุโมทนาด้วย

พระไตรปิฎกฉบับนี้ จะได้ถวายแด่สมเด็จพระสังฆราช ในวันที่ 24 เดือนนี้ ในวารที่ทรงเจริญพระชนมายุ 96 ปี ณ วัดพระศรีรัตนศาสดาราม ในวันที่ 24 พฤศจิกายนนี้

มอบหนังสือแก่ รร.จปร. :

เพื่อเป็นเกียรติแก่โรงเรียนนายร้อยพระจุลจอมเกล้า ขอมอบหนังสือพระไตรปิฎกฉบับย่อซึ่งเป็นฉบับรวบรวมตัวอย่างชุด 39 เล่ม ภาคภาษาไทยแก่ผู้บัญชาการโรงเรียนนายร้อยพระจุลจอมเกล้า ซึ่งเป็นการใช้เทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศที่นำสมัยมาจัดพิมพ์ เป็นการตามรอยพระไตรปิฎก จปร. ในอดีต เพื่อความมั่นคงแห่งชาติ ในโอกาสนี้ได้มอบ ฉบับพิมพ์ภาคภาษาอังกฤษ แก่ผู้อำนวยการส่วนการศึกษา รร. จปร. ด้วย

สมเด็จพระเจ้าภคินีเธอ เจ้าฟ้าเพชรรัตนราชสุดา สิริโสภาพัณณวดี ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดให้ข้าพเจ้าเชิญพระไตรปิฎกปาฬิ อักษรโรมัน 40 เล่ม ซึ่งทรงพระศรัทธาพระราชทานทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์แก่ กองทุนสนทนาธัมม์นำสุขฯ ในพระสังฆราชูปถัมภ์ ให้จัดสร้างขึ้น เพื่อพระราชทานแก่ มหาวิทยาลัยแห่งกรุงออสโล ประเทศนอรเวย์ ในวาระนี้ ข้าพเจ้ามีความยินดีเป็นอย่างยิ่ง

การพระราชทานพระไตรปิฎกฉบับสากลนี้ ทรงพระอนุสรณ์คำนึงว่า อภิลักขิตมงคลการฉลองพระชนมายุ 84 พรรษา ในวันที่ 24 พฤศจิกายน 2552 เป็นสมัยที่จะได้ทรงบำเพ็ญพระกุศลเป็นกรณีพิเศษ ครั้นความทราบฝ่าพระบาทว่า เมื่อพุทธศักราช 2436 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว พระอัยกาของพระองค์ เคยทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าโปรดกระหม่อมให้เชิญพระไตรปิฎกปาฬิ อักษรสยาม ซึ่งเป็นพระไตรปิฎกฉบับพิมพ์ชุดแรกของโลก มาพระราชทานแก่ห้องสมุด มหาวิทยาลัยแห่งกรุงออสโล นอกจากนี้ ยังเป็นการเจริญรอยพระกุศลจริยาของสมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่นางเธอ เจ้าฟ้งกัลยาณิวัฒนา กรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ ผู้สิ้นพระชนม์ไปแล้ว ซึ่งได้ทรงบำเพ็ญไว้เมื่อพุทธศักราช 2548 ด้วยการเชิญพระไตรปิฎกสากลไปพระราชทานแก่สถาบันสำคัญในนานาประเทศ ปรารภเหตุดังนี้ จึงทรงเห็นชอบตามคำกราบทูลของคณะข้าราชบริพารว่าสมควรจะได้พระราชทานพระไตรปิฎกฉบับอักษรโรมัน ไว้ประจำมหาวิทยาลัยเป็นการเพิ่มเติมจากฉบับอักษรสยาม เพื่อเจริญรอยพระยุคลบาทสมเด็จพระอัยกาพระองค์นั้น ในอันที่จะยังประโยชน์เกื้อกูลการศึกษาค้นคว้าทางด้านพระพุทธศาสนา ในหมู่ชนชาวตะวันตกผู้สนใจใฝ่รู้เกี่ยวกับศาสนาและปรัชญาสำคัญแห่งโลกบูรพาทิศ ทั้งนี้ ทรงหวังพระหฤทัยว่าพระกุศลวิทยาทานที่ทรงบำเพ็ญ จะเป็นมูลฐานแห่งความเข้าใจอันดีและความผาสุกยั่งยืนของมวลมนุษยชาติสืบไป

On this auspicious occasion, I am delighted and profoundly honoured to present, on behalf of Her Royal Highness Princess Bejaratana of Thailand, a 40-volume Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in Roman-script edition published by the Dhamma Society under the Patronage of His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, funded by Her Royal Highness, to the University of Oslo, Norway.

The presentation of this International Romanised Pāḷi Tipiṭaka also marks the Celebrations of Her Royal Highness' 84^thBirthday Anniversary, November 24, 2009.As a unique meritorious act for the occasion, Princess Bejaratana decides to follow the publication of the Tipiṭaka in Siam-script edition by her grandfather, His Majesty King Chulalongkorn, who in 1893 had the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka printed in book form for the first time in the world. One set of these historical printings was presented to and subsequently has been well-preserved here at the library of the University of Oslo. This presentation is to join a meritorious act of Her Royal Highness's late cousin, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra, who presented a special inauguration 40-volume Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in Roman-script edition to leading institutions worldwide in 2005 as well. Once informed of that, Her Royal Highness approved her staff's recommendation to present the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in Roman-script edition to the university to complement their Siam-script edition. With this act, Princess Bejaratana humbly follows her grandfather's dedication to promote studies of Buddhism, one of the most profound wisdom of the East, among scholars of the Western world. The Princess hopes that the merits of this International Tipiṭaka printing and presentation will lay for us the foundation for mutual understanding and sustainable harmony of humankind.

If should be noted that His Majesty King Rama VI, Princess Bejaratana's august Father, encouraged the use of the Roman-Script in accordance with the Pāḷi-sound nearly a century ago. Resulting in this 40-volume publication.

On behalf of Her Royal Highness Princess Bejaratana, I present the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in Roman-script to the University of Oslo as a token of friendship between Thais and Nowegians. May the marits of the World Tipiṭaka printing and the persentation bring wisdom, prosperity and life-long happiness to the people of the world, now and always.

The World Tipiṭaka Presentation to University of Oslo was organised on November 2, 2009.

The Presentation of the International Romanised-script Pāḷi Tipiṭaka also marks the 84th Birthday Anniversary Celebrations of Her Royal Highness Princess Bejaratana of Thailand, November 24th 2009.

As a unique meritorious act for the occasion, Princess Bejaratana decides to follow the publication of the Tipiṭaka in Siam-script edition by her grandfather, His Majesty King Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao, who in 1893, had the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka printed in book form for the first time in the world. One set of these historical printings were presented to and subsequently has been well-preserved here at the University of Oslo Library.

With this act, Princess Bejaratana humbly follows her grandfather's dedication to promote studies of Tipiṭaka, one of the most profound wisdom of the East, among scholars of the Western world. The Princess hopes that the merits of this International Tipiṭaka printing and presentation will lay for us the foundation for mutual understanding and sustainable harmony of humankind.

The World Tipiṭaka Edition is published as a gift of Dhamma by Dhamma Society Thailand with the late HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana as its Honorary Patron. The Presentation of the World Tipiṭaka Project is also supported by NCNK Foundation under the Queen's Patronage.

Director of the Library of Humanities and Social Sciences, Mr Halvor Konghavn

Dear Excellency, dear guests.

Let me introduce myself : My name is Halvor Kongshavn, I am the Library Director of the Library of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Oslo Library. On behalf of the library, it is a great honor and pleasure to receive such a magnificent gift published by the Dhamma Society. The Tipitaka in a roman transcript version is of immense value for the study of Buddhism as it is the only completely surviving early Buddhist canon.

I would like to say a few words about the University of Oslo Library. It is Norway’s largest research library. Hence, it is of great importance not only for the University of Oslo, but for all Norway. Our collections go back to when the University was established in 1811. Currently, they comprise several million volumes. Additionally, we own a constantly growing number of electronic documents. This year we are celebrating our tenth anniversary in this building - the most beautiful one on the University of Oslo Campus – and which we are very proud of. It was a pleasure for me to give you a tour of the library prior to this event.

The Library represents an important part of the University of Oslo’s academic and pedagogic activities. Primarily, our users are the university’s students, scholars and employees. However, we are a public library where everybody is welcome. We can provide documents and competence within a wide array of academic areas, for example the study of languages, traditions, cultures and religions – including Buddhism.

In the late 19th century, on the occasion of his 25th anniversary as the regent of Siam, King Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao ordered a printed version of the Tipitaka. Until then, it had existed for about two thousand years on palm leaves only. In 1896 the King donated the book, comprising of 39 volumes, to this library as a royal gift. We have always been very proud owners of this work, especially since it was printed in a very limited edition. As the volumes are now quite old, and very rare, they have been stored in our security stacks with limited access only. However, we are pleased to be able to present them to the public here today.

And we are even more happy to be able to present the Tipitaka to our users in a new edition, not only in a printed, romanized-script version, but also electronically via the Dhamma Society’s web page. As the largest university library in Norway we will now be the owners of different presentations of a text of great importance to millions of people all over the world.

In 1949, the British library philosopher A. Broadfield stated that the library exists for the sake of freedom of thought. Books are far the strongest safeguards of freedom of individual thought. He concluded : “The librarian's task is clear. He should keep thought free and fluid -- his own thought and all other thought that comes within his province”.

I myself would like to add the following to Broadfield’s wise words: No library, no academia.

I would also like to repeat some of our prorector’s thoughts: We could all benefit from looking into new ways of reviving the once so fruitful interaction between the east and the west. By receiving the Tipitaka – and also by receiving you and your delegation here – the library has taken part in such an interaction. We promise you we will take good care of your generous gift, in the same way as we always have done with the first edition. It will be classified, catalogued and labeled according to the best library customs, and will then be presented to our users together with the rest of our literature related to the study of Buddhism.

Dear Excellency.

On behalf of the University of Oslo, I am very pleased and honored to receive

the generous and important gift that the Tipitaka represents. The Romanized version that you have given us today complements the original edition, which due to its old age is safely preserved here in the library’s stacks.

We have learned that the 40-volume set of the Tipitaka is a royal gift of wisdom and peace. You can be sure the books are received by an institution with strong traditions within the study of world religions and philosophies. Among others, the study of religion in a multicultural society is a focus area at the University of Oslo. For many years our scholars have participated in establishing interreligious dialogues both in academia and the society at large.

We all know the important role that Buddhism plays in Asia, also politically. In the same way as the Evangelical-Lutheran religion is the official religion of Norway, Buddhism is Thailand’s state religion, with about 95% of the Thais as its followers. Historically, Thailand and the surrounding geographical areas have fostered a distinct Buddhist culture and art that still remain very active. The beautiful version that we have received from you of the Tipitaka - the earliest collection of Buddhist writings – is a result of these incredibly rich artistic expressions. I am certain that the books will prove invaluable to our students and scholars in their effort to interpret and analyze religious texts, rituals, traditions and statements.

The University of Oslo is proud to be able to offer a wide array of academic disciplines to our students. We put a lot of emphasis on providing them with a broad general education that tie different fields of study together. In order to secure their academic development and maturity, we believe that it is important that for example students of natural sciences also receive input from the humanities or social sciences, and vice versa.

Almost ever since the University of Oslo was founded, all the students have had to do a semester of preparatory courses that evolve around different aspects of philosophy and the history of ideas. This system was copied by the other public universities that were later founded in different parts of Norway. Even though the courses focus mostly on occidental philosophy, connecting lines are also drawn to oriental thinking and philosophy. A philosopher myself, I have always been fascinated by the junctions between the East and the West, and the non-Western traditions of philosophy. In a poetical way we may say that since the earliest human recollection, the East, following the sun, searched the West for something, which at the same time the West, facing the sun, hoped to find in the East.

Buddhism is considered one of the great world religions. The Buddhist path can be summed up as: 1) to lead a moral life; 2) to be mindful and aware of thoughts and actions; and 3) to develop wisdom and understanding. To many, the essence of Buddhism therefore goes beyond the regular concept of religion. Buddhism is considered more of a philosophy or 'way of life', especially if we keep in mind that the word philosophy literally means 'love of wisdom'.

When encountering other religions and beliefs we are challenged to explore our own faith and traditions. Of all religions, Buddhism seems to be one of the most respected and less criticized, both in Norway as in the rest of the Western world. It might be easier for people raised in a Christian culture to identify with Buddha, the enlightened founder of Buddhism, since his origin, in the same way as Jesus Christ’s, also was as a real, living person.

The former Bishop of Oslo, Gunnar Stålsett, met Dalai Lama when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Price. They were both asked to describe what they thought was the most precious thing in the other’s religion. Dalai Lama answered that he cherished the Christian God as a being that cares so much about each of us that he is even willing to die for us. Bishop Stålsett, on his side, emphasized Buddhism’s appreciation and respect for any form of life. Perhaps this is one of the reasons for Buddhism’s increasing appeal to Western people, especially those looking for peaceful solutions to wars and conflicts.

In an era marked by wars and economic recession perhaps we all would benefit from looking into new ways of reviving the once so fruitful interaction between the east and the west. There is a huge potential for reciprocal “alphabetization” between the cultures of the orient and the occident, as part of a renewal of a much needed intercultural dialogue. The new edition of the Tipitaka will provide students and scholars of the academic disciplines involved in these matters with an invaluable source of inspiration. In the true spirit of the gift’s intentions, let’s hope that will bring both them and us some peace and wisdom !

In 1893 the complete collection of the Buddhist canonical scriptures in the Pali language was printed in Bangkok on the order of His Majesty King Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao, the fifth reigning monarch of the Chakri dynasty of Thailand. This was the first time in history that the Tipitaka was made available in modern book format. His Majesty King Chulalongkorn furthermore chose to make the sacred scriptures of Buddhism a symbol of friendship with the world by donating the 39 volumes of the Tipitaka to seats of learning all over the world. One of the seats of learning was the University of Christiania as our capital was named at that time. They are symbols of King Chulalongkorn’s vision of his country becoming a part of the global community of nations. They are also symbols of how the first connections were established between our two countries. These connections were further confirmed when King Chulalongkorn himself visited Norway during the summer of 1907.

Today the University of Oslo is receiving a new set of the Tipitaka from King Chulalongkorn’s granddaughter, Her Royal Highness Princess Bejaratana on the occasion of her 84^th Birthday Anniversary. The designated representative of the Princess, Her Excellency Thanphuying Putrie Viravaidaya, have come to Oslo accompanied by a delegation from The Dhamma Society of Thailand to present a set of the 40 volumes of the Pali Tipitaka printed in Roman letters. It should also be mentioned that supporting t

his meritorious act is the RCNK Foundation and Thai Airways, which is the Official Carrier of the World Tipitaka to Oslo.

The institution publishing and distributing this set of the Pali Tipitaka is The M.L. Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society under the Patronage His Holiness Somdet Phra Ñāṇasaṃvara the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand.

The World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman script which is being presented here at the Oslo University Library today is a revised edition of the Tipitaka issued by the Buddhist council that took place in Rangoon in Burma during a period of two years from 1954 to 1956. At this council 2500 prominent scholar monks from all the countries of Theravada Buddhism collated existing editions and prepared a new edition of the whole Tipitaka usually referred to as the Sixth Council Edition or the International Edition. Its great significance lies in the fact that it is not only a monumental achievement of classical Theravada scholarship but also because it has the position of being the edition most broadly authorized by the religious hierarchy of Theravada Buddhism.

The Dhamma Society of Thailand has taken painstaking efforts in proofreading the available electronic and printed versions of the International Edition to ensure the highest level of accuracy of The World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman script. The printed version in 40 volumes was completed in 2005. For the inaugural presentation, HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, as Honorary President and Royal Patron, led a historic pilgrimage to Sri Lanka to present the special inaugural edition as a royal gift of Dhamma to the President of that country. The Dhamma Society has since presented The World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman script to selected institutions in various countries.

The Pali canon represents the only canonical collection of Buddhism that has been preserved complete in its original linguistic form. It is thus of immense historical significance in the context of the study of Buddhism of the Theravada school specifically as well as Buddhism generally. It is also of great importance as a rich source of knowledge about Indian society and culture as it was about two and a half millennia ago. But even more than that, the Tipitaka as the sacred scriptures of Buddhism remains the foundation for the Buddhist cultures of Asia. Knowledge of the Tipitaka is thus essential in order to fully understand these cultures. Also as expressions of ethical and spiritual values held dear by a significant section of humanity it is one of the pillars of our common world civilization.

For these reasons the Tipitaka needs to be known. The academic world has in our opinion an important role to play in exploring our common human heritage and in conveying knowledge about the sources of our global civilization. Presenting The World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman script is the humble contribution of this delegation. It is also an expression of our appreciation for the achievements of the University of Oslo in the study of the Buddhist heritage.

The texts of the Tipitaka are also reaching a broader audience in this country through translations into Norwegian. Graduates from this university have recently compiled a book with translations from Pali into Norwegian of a broad selection of texts from the Tipitaka. Published by the Buddhist Federation of Norway it will be distributed as a representative collection of canonical Buddhist scriptures.

The Dhamma Society will continue its activities of presenting The World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman script to seats of learning. Next year it will go to Beijing and to Washington DC for this purpose. But it need be said that the appreciation showed by the University of Oslo is a great inspiration in our work. Also we would celebrate the fact that with the presentation of The World Tipiṭaka here today the presentation of the Tipitaka by His Majesty King Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao 113 years ago has come full circle.

The World Tipiṭaka at the Constitutional Court of the Kingdom of Thailand

As part of the inauguration of the Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy (SIBA), the Royal Gift of the World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman Script from Thailand was ceremoniously enshrined at the SIBA Library by H.E. President Mahindra Rajapakse of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy (SIBA), Kandy

Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy (SIBA) was established in February 2009 as a new project of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, better known as Sri Dalada Maligawa in Sinhala, the local language, is the most venerated Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka. It is here that the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha is enshrined. The Temple is famous for its carvings and beautiful paintings that are unique to Sri Lanka. The most important part of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, the octagon (called Pattirippuwa), built by the last King of Sri Lanka is today the Tipiṭaka Hall of the old palace complex. Thousands of people line up every day to venerate this Temple and have a glimpse of its majesty. The new Academy www.siba.lk acquires its singular significance and uniqueness particularly among Sri Lankans and Buddhists in general due to its association with the Sri Dalada Maligawa.

The Academy is located within the precincts of the Buddhist Training and Research Centre of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic situated eight kilometers away from the city of Kandy in a peaceful natural environment surrounded by picturesque mountain ranges of the Kandy region which is blessed with a salubrious climate. It can be reached from Colombo, the capital city, by road or rail within about three and a half to four hours. The travel time between the International Airport, Katunayake and the city of Kandy by road is about two to two and a half hours.

The World Tipiṭaka Edition in 40 volumes was published by the Dhamma Society Fund in Bangkok in 2002. In 2005, upon the invitation by Her Excellency Chandrika Bandaranayaike Kumaratunga, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Royal Matriarch of Thailand, made a special 24-hour pilgrimage from Bangkok to Colombo to present the first inaugural set as a gift of Dhamma to the President of Sri Lanka, the cradle of the world's written Tipiṭaka. The World Tipiṭaka Presentation to the SIBA this year was announced earlier in 2008 at the Constitutional Court of the Kingdom of Thailand in Bangkok, the first institutional recipient of the World Tipiṭaka. The World Tipiṭaka Enshrinement at the SIBA by President Mahindra Rajapaksa was the final meritorious process of the World Tipiṭaka Presentation Worldwide initiated by Thailand and Sri Lanka. This special World Tipiṭaka Edition is the third set presented as a royal gift from the late Princess Galyani Vadhana of Thailand to the People of Sri Lanka. The second set was presented to the Parliament of Sri Lanka in 2006.

태국 왕실의 후원 하에 빨리어로 제작된 대장경(Tipiṭaka)를 로마자로 옮긴 ‘세계 대장경(World Tipiṭaka)’ 40책이 국내 최초로 동국대에 기증된다.

동국대(총장 오영교)는 “4월 23일 태국 ‘World Tipiṭaka’ 위원회 위원장인 버나그 교수(태국 아놉츄랑콘대) 등 20명이 동국대를 방문해 ‘세계 대장경(World Tipiṭaka)’을 기증한다”고 16일 발표했다. 기증법회는 11시 정각원에서 봉행된다.

빨리어로 된 대장경(Pāḷi Tipiṭaka)은 일본에서는 남전대장경으로 번역했다. 대승경전의 아함부에 해당하는 경전으로 태국, 스리랑카, 미얀마 등의 남방불교에서 독송하는 경전이다.

이번에 동국대에 기증되는 ‘세계대장경(World Tipiṭaka)’는 1957년에 미얀마에서 개최된 관련 국제회의에서의 합의를 기반해 1999년부터 6년간 작업을 거쳐 로마자체로 제작된 표준적이고 전통지향적인 빨리어 본 대장경이다.

책은 세계 각국에서 사용되고 있거나 대장경기술정보은행(Tipiṭaka Technology Data Base)에 보관돼 있는 14개 이본에 대한 상호 참조 자료도 포함하고 있다. 또 대장경(Tipiṭaka)과 관련한 연구자료, 인용, 발음에 관한 자료도 포함됐다.

동국대 관계자는 “이번에 기증받는 대장경은 남방불교 연구에 없어서는 안될 귀중한 자료”라며 “불교학 연구의 세계화에 더욱 큰 힘을 받게 됐다”고 말했다.

동국대는 기증식에 이어 태국방문단과 ‘세계 대장경(World Tipiṭaka)’의 국내 저작권 위임에 대한 사항을 협의할 예정이다.

한편, ‘세계대장경(World Tipiṭaka)’ 창립판은 2005년 3월 6일 스리랑카 대통령에게 첫 증정됐다. 스리랑카에서는 이 날을 기념해 3월 6일을 ‘세계대장경의 날(World Tipiṭaka Day)’로 선언하기도 했다.

기타 창립판 및 특별판은 스리랑카, 태국, 일본, 스웨덴, 네델란드 등에 기증됐다.

Background of The World Tipiṭaka Presentation to Dongguk University, Republic of Korea

Amidst the spring flower blossoms and the week-long celebration of Visak in Seoul, a 40-volume set of the World Tipiṭaka in Roman Script was solemnly handed-over by President of the World Tipiṭaka Council from Thailand to President of Dongguk University in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

This Great International Council Pāḷi Tipiṭaka Edition was published in Roman script for the first time by Dhamma Society in Bangkok. Since 2005, it has been presented to leading international institutions worldwide as a royal gift of Dhamma from Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Project Founding Honorary President and Royal Patron.

On November 14, 2008, the eve of the State Funeral of Princess Galyani Vadhana, a formal announcement of the World Tipiṭaka Presentation was organised by H.E. Justice Chat Chonlavorn, President of the Constitutional Court of the Kingdom of Thailand in Bangkok. Professor Won K. Seok, Director Dongguk University Library from Seoul, Republic of Korea, attended the ceremony. As a merit-making for the late Princess Patron, ten international institutions from ten countries worldwide, including Dongguk University of the Republic of Korea, were nominated by the World Tipiṭaka Council of Sri Lanka to receive this commemorative 40-volume set of the World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman Script.

This year in 2009, upon the invitation of President Oh Yong-kyo of Dongguk University, Professor Annop Kunavongkrit, President of the World Tipiṭaka Council, led a special 20-member delegation from Bangkok to Seoul. The Handing-over and the Celebration Ceremony of the World Tipiṭaka Enshrinement took place on April 23, 2009 at Dongguk University Campus.

Dongguk was one of the largest and leading private universities in Korea. It is the first higher learning institution in the Republic of Korea to have received the Royal Gift from the late Princess Matriarch of Thailand. This special gift will help Tipiṭaka Patrons of the two countries to closely collaborate on the study and the propogation of Wisdom in the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka, i.e., the printing of the World Tipiṭaka in Roman script, especially the latest "Personalised Printing Technology" for wider distribution as a gift of Dhamma both in Korea and abroad.

Dhamma Society is now planning for the handing-over of the royal gift to all the institutions which were nominated to receive the Roman-script edition last year.

The World Tipiṭaka Project is grateful to Princess Galyani Vadhana's Endowment Project and THAI International Airways "Miles for Merit" for the publication and the transportation of the Royal Gift of the World Tipiṭaka from Bangkok to Seoul. I am delighted and profoundly honoured to present a special inauguration 40-volume Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in Roman-script edition to leading institutions worldwide. This occasion is especially meaningful because this publication is the world’s first International Romanised Pāḷi Tipiṭaka -- from the only Great International Council, convened by 2,500 Theravāda Buddhist monks in the Buddhist Era 2500 or 1956 A.D. It is, therefore, a Heritage of Humanity Enlightenment which has been preserved for over 2500 years.

The three inaugural Pāḷi Tipiṭaka edtions were published in 2005 by the Dhamma Society under the Patronage of the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand. The first inaugural edition was presented to the people of Sri Lanka on March 6, 2005. I went on a Pilgrimage to Colombo upon the invitation of the President of Sri Lanka for the presentation of the special edition which is now preserved at the Presidential Mansion in Colombo. The special edition for the Kingdom of Thailand was presented to the people of Thailand on August 15, 2005 and is now preserved at the Constitutional Court of the Kingdom of Thailand in Bangkok. The special edition for the western world was presented on September 13, 2005 to the Kingdom of Sweden and is now preserved at the Uppsala University Library.

The presentation of the International Romanised Pāḷi Tipiṭaka is a meritorious act following the publication of the Tipiṭaka in Siam-script edition by my Grandfather, King Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao of Siam, who in 1893 had the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka printed in book form for the first time in the world. Over two hundred and sixty of these sets were presented to leading institutions worldwide. In Sri Lanka and Sweden, one set of these historic printings “Chulachomklao the Great of Siam Pāḷi Tipiṭaka” has been well-preserved both in the temple of the Holy Tooth Relics in Kandy and at the Carolina Rediviva in Uppsala.

After this inauguration, one thousand sets will be presented as a donation to leading institutions worldwide. Furthermore, the International Tipiṭaka Studies will be initiated as an integral part of the presentation. The International Tipiṭaka Studies in these leading institutions will integrate the wisdom-base in the Tipiṭaka with the knowledge-base of the world today. It is hoped that the integration and right understanding of the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka will ensure sustainable peace, as well as lasting security for the international community today.

May the merits of the International Tipiṭaka printing and the presentation bring wisdom, life-long happiness and prosperity to the people of the world, now and always.

การมอบพระไตรปิฎกปาฬิ ชุดพิเศษปฐมฤกษ์ 3 ชุด ที่พิมพ์ขึ้นโดยกองทุนสนทนาธัมม์นำสุขฯ ในพระสังฆราชูปถัมภ์ฯ ในปี พ.ศ. 2548 ได้จัดขึ้นสำหรับโลกตะวันออกตามคำเชิญของประธานาธิบดีแห่งประเทศศรีลังกา ซึ่งข้าพเจ้าได้เดินทางจาริกไปมอบแก่ประชาชนชาวศรีลังกา ประดิษฐาน ณ ทำเนียบประธานาธิบดี กรุงโคลัมโบ ในวันที่ 6 มีนาคม ชุดปฐมฤกษ์สำหรับราชอาณาจักรไทย มอบแก่ปวงชนชาวไทย ประดิษฐาน ณ ศาลรัฐธรรมนูญแห่งราชอาณาจักรไทย กรุงเทพมหานคร ในวันที่ 15 สิงหาคม และชุดปฐมฤกษ์สำหรับโลกตะวันตกมอบแก่ราชอาณาจักรสวีเดน ประดิษฐาน ณ มหาวิทยาลัยอุปซาลา นครอุปซาลา ในวันที่ 13 กันยายน

การมอบพระไตรปิฎกปาฬิ อักษรโรมันฉบับนี้ เป็นการบำเพ็ญบุญกิริยาตามรอยพระไตรปิฎกปาฬิ อักษรสยาม พระไตรปิฎกฉบับพิมพ์ชุดแรกของโลก ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวพระบรมอัยกาธิราชของข้าพเจ้า ได้ทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้จัดพิมพ์และได้พระราชทานไปยังสถาบันสำคัญทั่วโลกกว่า 260 สถาบัน เมื่อ 112 ปี มาแล้ว พระไตรปิฎกชุดประวัติศาสตร์ ฉบับ “จุลจอมเกล้าบรมธัมมิกมหาราช ร.ศ.112” ชุดนี้ ยังคงได้รับการเก็บรักษาอย่างดีมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน ณ สถานที่สำคัญและสถาบันเก่าแก่ต่างๆ ทั่วโลก เช่น วิหารพระทาฐธาตุ นครแคนดี ประเทศศรีลังกา และที่หอสมุดคาโรลีนา เรดิวีวา นครอุปซาลา ราชอาณาจักรสวีเดน

ภายหลังการมอบพระไตรปิฎกสากลชุดพิเศษปฐมฤกษ์แล้ว จะได้ดำเนินการมอบอีก 1,000 ชุด แก่สถาบันสำคัญทั่วโลก โดยมีพระไตรปิฎกศึกษาระดับนานาชาติ เป็นส่วนสำคัญของการมอบพระไตรปิฎกสากลชุดนี้ด้วย ขอหวังว่า พระไตรปิฎกศึกษาระดับนานาชาติในสถาบันสำคัญทั่วโลกนี้ จักให้ความรู้และความเข้าใจใหม่แก่โลกปัจจุบัน ช่วยเสริมสร้างฐานความรู้ในสรรพวิทยาการให้ลึกซึ้งสู่หลักธัมมะในพระไตรปิฎก และบูรณาการเป็นฐานปัญญาเพื่อสันติสุขและมั่นคงในโลกต่อไป

저희 왕실에서 40권의 로마자본 빨리삼장(Pāḷi Tipiṭaka)을 세계의 선도적인 연구기관들에 기증할 수 있게 되어 매우 기쁘고 영광으로 생각합니다. 이번에 기증하게 되는 로마자본 빨리삼장은 불기 2,500년(서기 1956년)에 2,500명의 테라와다(Theravāda) 스님이 참여한 국제적인 결집을 통해서 간행되었다는 점에서 매우 뜻이 깊습니다. 빨 리삼장은 2,500년 이상 지속되어 온 인류 문화의 자산입니다.

태국 종정의 후원아래 담마협회(Dhamma Society)는 이 중요한 빨리삼장을 세 번 출 간했습니다. 첫 번째 출판본은 2005년 3월 3일에 스리랑카 국민들에게 기증되었습니 다. 저는 스리랑카 대통령의 초청으로 직접 콜롬보에 가서 특별판을 기증을 했고 현재 콜롬보에 있는 스리랑카 대통령 관저에 보관되어 있습니다. 두 번째 태국을 위한 출판 본은 2005년 8월 15일에 태국 국민들에게 기증되었으며 현재 방콕에 있는 왕립 헌법 재판소에 보관되어 있습니다. 세 번째 서양의 국가들을 위한 출판본은 2005년 9월 13 일에 스웨덴 왕실에 기증되어 현재 웁살라대학 도서관에 보관되어 있습니다.

로마자 빨리삼장(Pāḷi Tipiṭaka)을 기증하는 것은 저의 조부이신 출라롱콘 출라촘클라 오(Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao) 왕께서 1893년에 빨리삼장을 사이암(Siam) 문자 로 책으로 출판 하신 뜻을 계승하는 공덕이 넘치는 선행입니다. 지금까지 260개 이상 의 빨리삼장이 전 세계 주요 기관에 기증되었습니다. 스리랑카와 스웨덴에서는 이 역 사적인 『출라촘클라오 사이암 빨리삼장』이 캔디(Kandy)의 불치사와 웁살라의 캐롤 리나 레디비바(Carolina Rediviva) 도서관에서 각각 잘 보관되어 있습니다.

チュラーポーン王女殿下のスピーチ

本日、日本の１４の主要にこの４０冊セットのパーリ三蔵を贈呈することが出来、真に光栄でございます。これは１９５６年に行われた、２５００人のテーラワーダ僧侶による国際結集を基にした、世界初のローマ字パーリ三蔵の印刷物で、２５００年以上保存されてきた人類の悟りの遺産で、とても大切なものです。

最初の三蔵セットはカラヤーニ殿下によって２００５年３月６日に、当時のスリランカ大統領に贈呈されました。その三蔵のセットは今、コロンボの大統領府に安置されています。また、タイ国民に贈呈された三蔵は現在バンコクの憲法裁判所に安置されています。そして、西洋の国々のための三蔵はスウェーデンに贈呈され、現在ウプサラ大学の図書館に保存されています。

ローマ字パーリ三蔵の贈呈は私の父の祖父であるチュラーロンコーン国王が印刷出版したタイ文字パーリ三蔵の出版に次いで賞賛すべき行為です。チュラーロンコーン国王は１８９３年に、世界で初めてパーリ三蔵を本の形に制作して、その２６０セット以上を世界の主要機関に贈呈しました。その内、日本に３０セットが贈呈されました。

この国際版のパーリ三蔵の出版と贈呈による功徳が、世界の人々に、いつまでも英知と幸福、そして繁栄を与える様お祈り致します。

タイより延暦寺にパーリ語三蔵経寄贈

　九月十日、和宗総本山四天王寺（出口順得管長・大阪市）において、「ローマ字版パーリ語三蔵経」がチュラポーン・タイ王女より武覚超延暦寺執行に寄贈された。同経の「シャム文字版三蔵経」が明治二十六（一八九三）年に延暦寺に寄贈されており、今回百十五年振りに新たにローマ字版が寄贈されたことで、今後、関係する学術研究への寄与が期待される。

　十日、四天王寺で行われた贈呈式はタイ王室が後援し同経の制作を担ったダンマ・ソサエティ財団と日本テーラワーダ仏教協会が主催。タイと日本の関係者二百余名が出席、タイのプミポン国王の第三女・チュラポーン王女より武延暦寺執行に同経が手渡された他、国立国会図書館や仏教系大学などにも寄贈された。

　同王女は贈呈に際し「パーリ語三蔵経は、二千五百年以上保存されてきた人類の悟りの遺産で大切なものです。このローマ字版の出版と贈呈が世界の人々に叡智と幸福、そして繁栄を与える様お祈りいたします」と挨拶を行った。

　これに対し、武延暦寺執行が贈呈された側を代表して「このたびの寄贈により仏の教えが世界に広がり、人々の幸福と平和の実現に大きく寄与するものと確信します」と謝意を述べた。

　明治期の「シャム文字版三蔵経」は、当時の仏教研究機関五大陸・二百六十カ所に、チュラポーン王女の曾祖父にあたるチュラーロンコーン国王が寄贈している。

　同経が散逸してしまっている機関もある中、延暦寺の叡山文庫に収蔵されている同経は、完全な形で残っている。そのため、同日の贈呈式には、この叡山文庫所蔵のものが展示された。

　今回のローマ字版は既に寄贈を受けている所も含め、日本国内十四カ所の仏教研究機関に贈られているが、国外でもインド、スリランカやスウェーデンなどにも寄贈されている。また、コンピュータ時代に対応させて、データベース化もされており、今後の活用が期待されている。

　水尾寂芳天台宗教学部長は今回の寄贈に関し「明治期に頂いたシャム文字版が完全な形で残っているのは珍しいと聞いています。叡山文庫には幸い、完全な状態で収蔵されており、今回、それに加えてローマ字版を延暦寺にお贈り頂いたことは、まことに名誉であり、有り難く思っております」と語っている

Thai Airways Donates Air-miles to Norwegian Buddhists

The World Tipiṭaka Edition, 40-volume Romanised edition of the 25-century old teaching of the Buddhist Theravāda tradition in the orthodox and original Pāḷi language.

Thai Airways has recently offered 3.9 million air-miles to HRH, the late Princess Galyani Vadhana's Tipiṭaka Endowment Project. The donated miles will be used to transport a 40-volume set of sacred Buddhist scriptures (The World Tipiṭaka Edition) to The Buddhist Federation of Norway. The scriptures are in Roman script, and were given, as a royal gift of wisdom and peace from Thailand, to The Buddhist Federation of Norway last year in connection with the funeral of Princess Galyani Vadhana.

The scriptures, which have been produced especially for The Buddhist Federation of Norway, will physically be handed over at a ceremony on the 17th of August in the Royal Thai Embassy in Oslo by representatives from the Dhamma Society -- a charitable organisation in the Buddhist Theravāda Tradition, founded in 1997.

According to the president of The Buddhist Federation of Norway, Egil Lothe, the scriptures have a practical and symbolic significance to those who practice Buddhism in Norway. He adds: “The gift is a great encouragement and acknowledgement of our efforts in this organisation.”

Since 1999 the Dhamma Society Fund has undertaken the publication of the Tipiṭaka in Roman Script, the World Edition. In 2005, the printing project was finally completed and was published in 40 volumes as a homage to the Buddha and in honour of the Buddhist Sovereign Monarchy of Thailand. For an inaugural presentation, HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana, as Honorary President and Royal Patron, led a historic 24-hour Pilgrimage by a special flight from Bangkok to Colombo to present the special inaugural edition as a royal gift of Dhamma to the President of Sri Lanka on March 6, 2005.

Also Sweden received a special World Tipiṭaka Edition in 2005.

เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ บริษัทการบินไทย จํากัด (มหาชน) ได้มอบไมล์สะสม 3.9 ไมล์ แก่โครงการเผยแผ่ พระไตรปิฎกสากล ในสมเด็จกรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ (มูลนิธิร่วมจิตต์ฯ น้อมเกล้า เพื่อเยาวชน ในพระบรมราชินูปถัมภ์). ไมล์สะสมที่รับบริจาคนี้จะนําไปใช้ในการอัญเชิญคัมภีร์ ในพระพุทธศาสนา ชุด 40 เล่ม (พระไตรปิฎกสากล) เป็นพระธัมมทานแห่งปัญญาและสันติสุข จากสมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่นางเธอ เจ้าฟ้ากัลยาณิวัฒนา กรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ มอบแก่สหพันธ์พระพุทธศาสนาแห่งนอรเวย์ ซึ่งเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการงานบําเพ็ญกุศลงานพระเมรุ ในสมเด็จกรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ เมื่อปีที่แล้ว

พระไตรปิฎกสากลชุดนี้ได้จัดพิมพ์ขึ้นเป็นพิเศษแก่สหพันธ์พุทธศาสนาแห่งนอรเวย์ และจะมีพิธี จัดมอบอย่างเป็นทางการในที่สถานทูตไทย ณ กรุงออสโล โดยผู้แทนกองทุนสนทนาธัมม์นําสุขฯ ในพระสังฆราชูปถัมภ์ฯ ซึ่งเป็นองค์กรกุศลในพระพุทธศาสนาเถรวาท ก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2542

มร. อีจิล โลเท่ (President Egil Lothe), ประธานสหพันธ์พุทธศาสนาแห่งนอรเวย์ (The Buddhist Federation of Norway) ได้กล่าวว่าพระไตรปิฎกชุดนี้มีความหมาย ในทั้งในเชิงปฏิบัติที่เป็นจริงและในด้านสัญลักษณ์แก่ผู้ที่ปฎิบัติตามหลักพระพุทธศาสนาในประเทศนอรเวย์ “พระธัมมทานนี้เป็นกําลังใจและเครื่องหมายแห่งความอุตสาหะพยายามขององค์กรเรา”

นับแต่ปี พ.ศ. 2542 เป็นต้นมา กองทุนสนทนาธัมม์นําสุขฯ ในพระสังฆราชูปถัมภ์ฯ ได้ดําเนินโครงการ พระไตรปิฎกภาษาปาฬิ โดยจัดพิมพ์เป็นอักษรโรมัน เรียกว่า พระไตรปิฎกฉบับสากล (The World Tipiṭaka Edition) การดําเนินงานได้สําเร็จในปี พ.ศ. 2548 โดยจัดพิมพ์ ชุดละ 40 เล่ม เพื่อถวายเป็นพุทธบูชา และเฉลิมพระเกียรติพระมหากษัตริย์พุทธมามกะไทย โดยมีสมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่นางเธอ เจ้าฟ้ากัลยาณิวัฒนา กรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ ในฐานะผู้ทรงเป็นประธานกิตติศักดิ์ และองค์อุปถัมภ์ เสด็จจาริกภายในเวลา 24 ชม โดยสายการบินเที่ยวพิเศษจากกรุงเทพสู่กรุงโคลัมโบ อัญเชิญพระไตรปิฎกเป็นพระธัมมทานไปพระราชทานแก่ประธานาธิบดีแห่งศรีลังกา เมื่อวันที่ 6 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2548.

ในปี พ.ศ. 2548 ประเทศสวีเดนก็ได้รับพระราชทานพระไตรปิฎกสากลด้วย

From Sacred Pāḷi Text to Wisdom Heritage of Humanity

Theravāda or Doctrine of Elders is a school of Buddhasāsana, a Pāḷi-language term typically often translated as Buddhism. Theravāda Buddhasāsana draws profound scriptural direction from the Pāḷi Canon or Tipiṭaka, acknowledged to be the oldest authenthic record of Buddha's words. Theravāda Buddhasāsana is the predominant religion of South and Southeast Asia, prevailing from the 1st century BC. The sangha or Buddhist order of monks is one of the Three Jewels of Buddhasāsana (the other two being the Buddha and the Dhamma or the Doctrine).

In 2002, the M.L. Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society Fund under the Patronage of His Holiness Somdet Phra Ñāṇasaṃvara the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand published for the first time in Roman-script edition the complete Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in 40 volumes, based on the resolution of the Great International Tipiṭaka Council which was convened five decades earlier in Yongoon, Myanmar, by 2500 erudite Buddhist monks worldwide.

In 2005, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Royal Matriarch of Thailand and Her Excellency Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, President of Domocratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka jointly inaugurated the World Tipiṭaka Edition in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Since then, this Roman-script canon -- the World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman Script -- has been presented as a Royal Gift of Wisdom & Peace from Thailand to various libraries and leading institutions around the world. By 2008 over 18 countries, including Sri Lanka, Sweden, Thailand, Netherlands, India and Japan, have received the World Tipiṭaka as royal gift.

While we, the Patrons of the World Tipiṭaka, are making available the Pāḷi text of the Buddhist canonical scriptures which are the objects of religious veneration and belief, it is not our purpose to advocate the position of a sectarian doctrine or religious system in any institution. Rather, we hope to provide a means of access to the Buddhist scriptures as a wisdom heritage of humanity, based on the most accurate historical research and latest technology available. It is our intention to provide a new ground of knowledge towards wisdom in the Tipiṭaka for sustainable peace and inner security for the international community worldwide.

The Tipiṭaka WebService (www.tipitakaquotation.net), also developed by the Dhamma Society, has been available online since 2008. The World Tipiṭaka Database is currently being developed as a Wisdom Heritage Repository Online and will soon be connected to the digital cultural heritage of European Union and North America.

In 2009, Patrons of the World Tipiṭaka will organise the first Tipiṭaka Presentation in the United States of America. This commemorative presentation will follow the historic trails of Siam-script Tipiṭaka which was presented in 1895 by King of Chulachomklao of Siam (Thailand) to no less than 50 institutions in USA , including, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and leading universities across USA.

THAI Launches ‘Miles for Merit 2009’
Preserving Wisdom Heritage of Humanity

Thai Airways International Public Company Limited introduces ‘Miles for Merit 2009’, a merit-making campaign for Royal Orchid Plus members. Through this campaign, Royal Orchid Plus members can donate miles to support ‘the World Tipiṭaka Presentation,’ a project graciously initiated by HRH the late Princess Galyani Vadhana, the World Tipiṭaka Patron.

Mr. Pandit Chanapai, THAI’s Executive Vice President for Commercial Department said that THAI first embarked upon the ‘Miles for Merit campaign’ in 2007. The campaign was a resounding success. Award tickets redeemed from donated miles brought 80 venerable monks to Buddhist holy sites in India and Nepal, in honour of His Majesty the King’s auspicious 80th anniversary.

This year ‘Miles for Merit 2009’ campaign will support the transportation as well as the presentation of the 40-volume set of ‘World Tipiṭaka Edition in Roman Script’ (the world's first complete Great International Council Edition) to leading international institutions worldwide. For the very first time, the ‘World Tipiṭaka Edition’ will be presented as a royal gift of wisdom and peace from Thailand to the world, fulfilling the late Princess Galyani Vadhana’s wish on this project. Tipiṭaka, written in Pāḷi language, contains the 25-century old sacred text of the Buddhist Theravāda heritage.

Khunying Saengduen na Nakorn, President of Princess Galyani Vadhana's Tipiṭaka Endowment Project supported by the Ruamchit Norm Klao Foundation, said that since the project inauguration in 2005, many countries have requested the World Tipiṭaka from Thailand. The World Tipiṭaka has been presented to leading institutions in Sweden, India, Netherlands, and Japan with priority given to institutions which received the Siam-script Tipiṭaka from King Chulalongkorn Chulachomklao of Siam, Princess Galyani Vadhana's grandfather, over a century ago. Now published in the internationally recognised Roman script, people all over the world will have much greater access to recite and study the Tipiṭaka.

Thai Airways International Public Company is proud to be part of the ‘World Tipiṭaka Presentation’ project. The 2009 Tipiṭaka Presentation will include educational and research institutions in the United States such as the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC and top universities across the country. The Project targets institutions in no less than 32 countries which received the Siam-script edition over a century ago.

First of all, I would like to express my deepest sorrow about the demise of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra, Honorary President the World Tipiṭaka Presentation to Leading International Institutions worldwide.

I am happy and honoured to welcome all of you who have kindly visited Nagoya, Japan, a place so far away just a few days after the cremation of Her Royal Highness to present 40 volumes of the latest Pāḷi edition of the World Tipiṭaka Council in the Roman Script, for which I am sincerely grateful.

The study of the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in Japan around the end of the 19th century started with the lecture by Professor Tagakusu Junjiro who had studied in England. Subsequently Professor Nangai Magato and Master Misuno Kogen, a teacher to whom I am greatly indebted, have developed it. Several universities such as Komazawa, Taisho, and Otani universities have produced quality personnel who have been doing researches until many Pāḷi researchers from all over Japan have collaborated and succeeded in translating the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka into Japanese called “Nandendaiso Scripture” consisting of 65 volumes and 70 issues.

Later when World War II ended in 1945 Japan was in a ruinous and pathetic state. I entered Tokyo University in 1947 and started to learn Pāḷi immediately. There were very few documents in the research room and no Pāḷi dictionary could be found. In 1960 I began to search for Pāḷi documents from all over the world and started to collect them since then. At present my library is the best source in Japan. Now that I have received the latest Pāḷi edition of the World Tipiṭaka Council in the Roman Script from Thailand, my research room is complete and I am elated. Thank you very much.

Now I would like to ask permission to clarify some points.
At the time when the Buddha was still alive (around 5-6 centuries before Christ) a powerful Kingdom in India was Māgadha. The Buddha might have spoken the ancient Māgadha language. Buddhist Theravāda Tradition in Southern India believes that the language has changed to Pāḷi. The word “Pāḷi” means “Scripture” but theoretically during the spread of Buddhasāsana from Magadha in East India to West India it could be said that Pāḷi was used as the language of the scripture three centuries before Christ. In the reign Emperor Ashoka, Buddhasāsana and Pāḷi spread from India to Sri Lanka and further on to Burma (present-day Myanmar), Cambodia, and Laos.

Not long after the Buddha had attained Nibbāna, 500 enlightened monks assembled at the holy cave. It was the first time that such a mass assembly took place to revise the Tipiṭaka. The Sixth Great Tipiṭaka Council in 1956 to commemorate the 2500th anniversary of the Buddhist Era took place in Yangon, Burma. A great number of Buddhist monks came from all the countries that have inherited Buddhist Theravāda Tradition. They compiled the Scripture by reciting the Tipiṭaka in unison. The outcome of that assemblage was the publishing of the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in the Burmese script and this sixth revision was held to be the principal Scripture for Buddhist Theravāda Tradition. However, not long after the publishing of the Tipiṭaka, Burma underwent political changes so the project has not progressed since.

The latest Pāḷi edition of the World Tipiṭaka Council in the Roman Script from Thailand, even though based on the manuscript in the Burmese script, has also been compared with more than 18 scriptures published in various countries and analysed by over 50 technical experts in computer engineering who spent three years revising and editing it. It is Thailand’s gratifying and great project of the century. The organisation assigned to undertake the project was the M.L. Maniratana Bunnag Dhamma Society Fund under the Patronage of His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, supervised by its Chancellor, Major Suradhaj Bunnag, who has kindly joined today’s event.

From another approach, Buddhasāsana spread from the northwest of India via the Silk Road into China, Korea, and Japan, and was known as the Northern Buddhasāsana. Since the time of the Buddha, Buddhasāsana in India had split into several sects. The tradition of Buddhasāsana originated when the Buddha was alive had developed into Mahāyāna and Vajarayāna sects of Buddhasāsana. At the end of the 12th century Buddhasāsana disappeared from India. At present modern Buddhasāsana in India has been restored via Sri Lanka. A part of Mahāyāna Sect has spread southward, but the Southern Buddhasāsana has been propagated through the conservation of the original Buddhasāsana in the Pāḷi language.

As for the Northern Buddhasāsana, most of the Buddhist scriptures belonging to traditional Mahāyāna Sect used Sanskrit as the language of Dhamma. The original Buddhist Scripture conveying the teaching of the Buddha had been translated into the northern Chinese script as “Agama Sutra.” Since Mahāyāna Sect prospered a great deal, there had been numerous translations of Mahāyāna scriptures. Japanese researchers have always been seriously doing research on the birth and transmission of Mahāyāna Sect. There are several parts that are still not well known and all the Mahāyāna scriptures have not yet been assembled and summed up. The Pāḷi Tipiṭaka has been clearly compiled so we know that it is the authentic compilation of the Buddha’s teachings. Judging from the birth of this Pāḷi Tipiṭaka, it can be concluded that it is the principal scripture, the foundation derived from a direct transmission from the Buddha.

Buddhasāsana in Japan is divided into sects, each of which has its own founder. Thus, the Buddha is often forgotten. It is not necessary to emphasise that the Buddha gave birth to Buddhasāsana. No leader of any sect stands on his right-hand side. We should all reconsider this point. All sects of Buddhasāsana in the world hold the Buddha to be the most excellent, whether Dougenzenshi or Shinranshounin or Nichirenshounin, would agree with this truth.

I would like to return to where I left off. When we listen to the Pāḷi Tipiṭaka, we feel as if we were listening to the Buddha himself, for example, when he was delivering Dhamma Discourse to his disciples he would call them bhikkave, bhikkave. I think that this characteristic of the Buddha’s speech has been transmitted in the original without any adaptation.

After the Great East-Asian War Japan has re-established the country’s economic conditions. At the same time the Pāḷi research has also progressed, with valuable research works and many new translations being published on a regular basis. Most of them were translated from the books of Pali Text Socity in London. Later there were several translations from the Burmese script of the Great International Tipiṭaka Council (the Sixth Council in Burma). In the near future I absolutely hope that there will also be researches on and translations of this latest edition of the Great International Tipiṭaka Council in the Roman Script -- “The World Edition” -- from Thailand.

At present, the Pāḷi research in Japan has taken the Suttantapiṭaka, Vinayapiṭaka, and Dhammapitaka from the Tipiṭaka to be examined together with historical documents, documents concerning grammar, and relevant references. The research works and their Japanese translations are regularly publicized. We think that we would be able to present these references to you in the near future. I believe that reading the reference will enable one to deeply and correctly understand the Tipiṭaka from another perspective.

In general, each of the countries in Southeast Asia that adhere to Buddhist Theravāda Tradition would publish the Pāḷi Scripture in their own language, which is a normal practice for each country. When I was teaching graduate students of Pāḷi, I made them do a research on four types of scripts: Thai, Burmese, Sinhala of Sri Lanka, and Devanagari of India on their own for two years. After that they had to take a Pāḷi reading comprehension test twice a year or at the end of the first and second terms. My exams consisted of all four types of scripts, which was very depressing for the students. However, I think that from now on only two types of scripts, Thai and Sinhala, should be enough.

The publishing of this latest Pāḷi edition of the World Tipiṭaka Council in the Roman Script is the first of its kind accomplished by Asians as a meritorious project to disseminate the Buddha’s words to be known worldwide. I believe that Japan’s research, though a bit late, must be continually developed.

In 1988 there was a Pāḷi research in our own country. Researchers interested in Buddhist culture from all places assembled to found the Society for the Study of Pāḷi and Buddhist Culture. Academic seminars are organised annually and the society’s journal called the “Journal of Pāḷi and Buddhist Culture” is regularly issued. At present there are altogether 220 members including members from abroad. It is the only academic society in Japan with expertise in Pāḷi that joins the Science Council of Japan, an agency that organises activities under the Prime Minister’s Office. The society has set its sights on doing activities in the form of academic exchanges among a great number of researchers, with special interest in the Buddhist Theravāda Tradition in foreign countries.

Apart from academic research, the recent movement in Japan worth paying attention to is that the dynamic Buddhist Theravāda Tradition is continuously developing. I myself appreciate this movement and have been observing it with interest. In countries in Europe which is the world of Christianity, there are numerous temples, Dhamma and meditation centres in operation. In Asia, Islam and socialism have clashed, causing difficulty. As a participant in a research on Buddhasāsana, I care very much about the present situation.

Buddhasāsana has the Buddha as the founder. The Tipiṭaka is a sacred scripture that has directly transmitted the Buddha’s words. Buddhasāsana in countries around the world has started from the same point of origin and developed and spread worldwide, which at present the world has reached a time of crisis. What can Buddhasāsana offer to help rescue it from all perils? All the Dhammas concerning Morality from the Five Precepts, the Eight Precepts, the Four Noble Truths, to the Noble Eightfold Path are all very crucial. I would like to suggest the following four issues for consideration.

1. According to the Life of the Buddha, He was born, walked by himself on lotus blooms, meditated until he attained enlightenment and became the Buddha. From that time on he had become the Tathāgata who taught to render benefit to the world, human beings and non-human, the first and foremost Teacher who had made Buddhasāsana complete.

2. In a competitive society such as the one at present, it should be accepted that anyone who can win over himself should be considered a true “Jina” or conqueror according to the Buddha’s teaching.

3. People in the world have unanimously talked about sustainable development, but it should be accepted that man’s ability to repress his defilements and cravings and adhere to Santuṭṭhi or sufficiency is also a way leading to becoming a true human being just like the Buddha’s way of leading his life with only the three pieces of cloth and one begging bowl.

4. The worst situation in the world is waging war. We should accept the highest merit of Nibbāna that in the Buddha’s lifetime there were at least two times that he had learned from the effort to prevent war and bring peace to the world.

These are the four issues that I would like to present.
Even though the Spaceship called Earth which shares the same fate as all human beings should come to the worst, I believe that the thing which can show the way to real happiness is the Pāḷi Scripture. All Buddhists should trace their way back to the foundation of Dhamma in the Pāḷi Scripture taught by the Buddha and search until they find Buddhasāsana in a new perspective from that point.

The 40-volume Pāḷi Tipiṭaka is deemed as mankind’s truly invaluable treasure. I would like to express my sincerest respect and thanks for your goodwill and perseverance in bringing them to Nagoya, Japan, which is such a faraway place.

Finally, I hope that the presentation of the latest Pāḷi edition of the World Tipiṭaka in the Roman Script will create a firmer bond between Thailand and Japan. I would like to thank representatives from the Japan Theravāda Buddhist Association who have dedicated themselves to coordinating with the city of Nagoya and the various institutions and universities in Tokyo and Kansai District. My special thanks go to President of the Japan Theravāda Buddhist Association, Mr. Junichi Konishi, who has always been giving his support.

Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am happy to welcome you all to this Tipiṭaka Preview and Reception. Warmly welcome especially to Their Excellencies the Ambassadors of Sweden, Sri Lanka, Japan, and Republic of Korea.

Today the representatives of ten leading institutions from Asia and Europe have arrived in Bangkok to accomplish three purposes:

(1) to receive the World Tipiṭaka in the Roman Script;
(2) to participate at the World Tipiṭaka Recitation;
(3) to attend the Royal Cremation Ceremony.

Tomorrow the Constitutional Court of Thailand will organize the World Tipiṭaka Presentation and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration together with the Dhamma Society will organize the World Tipiṭaka Recitation in memory of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Patron of the World Tipiṭaka.

The Tipiṭaka is the world heritage containing the message of wisdom and peace. It has been preserved in Asia in Pāḷi language written in national scripts.

The Dhamma Society is a small private organization under the patronage of His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand. Because of the dedication of the patrons and the use of modern technology, the Dhamma Society completed its first main task in 2005, the production of the World Tipiṭaka in Roman Script based on the resolution of the International Tipiṭaka Council held over 50 years ago. Since then the Dhamma Society has continued its second main task, the presentation of the World Tipiṭaka, by presenting the 40-volume of the World Tipiṭaka to leading institutions, by developing web-based technology to access to the electronic Tipiṭaka, and by organizing the Tipiṭaka Recitations.

Tipiṭaka Recitation is a wisdom-based activity. From the Tipiṭaka, all participants derive wisdom, happiness, and peace by reciting together the words of the Buddha while reflecting on their meanings. For this, the Tipiṭaka Recitation Manuals based on the Roman-script World edition are produced and distributed as a gift of Dhamma. Tomorrow, the whole country joins in reciting from the World Tipiṭaka in Roman Script. I thank the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration for publishing one million copies of the World Tipiṭaka Recitation Manual and also organizing this mega event in memory of Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, Royal Patron of the World Tipiṭaka.

It is our expectation that through this meritorious act, millions of people in Thailand and the Tipiṭaka patrons from various countries will realize that the great potentiality of the World Tipiṭaka in Roman Script in maintaining lasting peace and wisdom in the world, the vision of the late Pincess Galayani Vadhana and also her grandfather, King Chulachomklo of Siam, who published the world’s first Tipiṭaka edition in 1893. It is the mission of the World Tipiṭaka Council as well. Therefore, I expect the Recipients of the World Tipiṭaka to utilize the potentiality of the World Tipiṭaka for the benefit of the world. Let us work together to accomplish this noble mission.

May Her Royal Highness achieve the supreme bliss of Nibbāna.
